the answer starts by asking: "what" pointed to further possibilities?

is it the images? no
is it the camera? no
is it the missile? no

It is the whole mission or achievement described in the whole clause "the first ...... 65 miles",
so we need a modifier that can modify the whole previous clause, which is the (v+ing) participial phrase in choice D.

verb-ing modifier appears after a clause and is preceded by a comma, then it modifies the entire preceding clause.

Here pointing (in option D ) modifies the entire precceeding clause, hence Answer must be (D)
