While it is nice to be liked, do you think there is a way to not allow these schools to contact you?

I would prefer not to be spammed by schools that I have no interest in.

If you prefer not to be contacted by any schools whatsoever, you can opt out from receiving any notifications by unchecking a box in your mba.com account. As far as I know, there is no way to opt out from lower-ranking schools but receive e-mails from higher ranked schools at the same time.

Novanative, I am just being curious, are you from USA?

Yes, I'm in the US. I am probably in the minority of guys on this forum because I am looking solely at evening programs, so obviously I wasn't interested in most of the schools that did contact me, but I was glad that it wasn't just a bunch of low tier programs.

That is correct, you can opt in and get everyone to solicit you or you can choose to have no one make a pitch for you.

I have never seen any Top 10 throw an email pitch or a call or anything. Then again, these schools' reps can market themselves.

I remember receiving a ton of e-mails after I took the GMAT last July, and they still continue to trickle in. A lot of the lower-ranked/ non-ranked schools sent emails waiving application fees and saying I would likely get scholarships to their programs if I apply. The one Top-25 full-time program that said “candidates with similar profiles as mine who are accepted typically receive scholarships of 20-30k” was the Tepper school. I actually did end up applying to Tepper as my 5th ranked school through the Consortium, and am currently on the waitlist after an interview. Long story short, I wouldn’t look into those e-mails too much.

Hit it on the money. These emails are made solely for the purpose to possibly increase these business schools' rankings. First more people apply, which also means more people get rejected. Acceptance rate, especially for a full time program can affect the rankings considerably. Chances are that they market to a lot of students, including students with GMAT's in the range of the school, above the range, and below the range.

Thanks guys, that is what I originally thought but was not sure. But it did seem to me weird that MIT or London Business School would actually send an e-mail. As far as Hult is concerned, it does not surprise me as it is far from a prestigious school.

I have received a bunch of emails as well, and some calls and mailings but I'm not terribly annoyed either They include:

1. Kenan-Flagler(though I did express some interest around the same time I registered for the GMAT)
2. Hult (phone call)
3. Renssalaer Polytechnic
4. Daniels (University of Denver)
5. Virginia Tech
6. Mason SOM
7. Mason (William and Mary)
8. Boston College
9. Marymount University
10. University of Florida

The reputation of the schools vary considerably, but I was glad to see that some decent schools like Florida and BC and UNC were interested in me.

Same culprits for me, with the addition of Tuck, Darden, Tepper, ESADE, Said, BU and Wisconsin-Madison. Wisconsin-Madison even sent me a box filled with consumer products during the holidays.

I can't speak of LBS, but MIT and UNC were the most annoying two schools! I swear at one point, until I unsubscribed from both, it felt like I was getting an e-mail every day from them. Ugh. :x

I can add a new school to the list.

The Duke Cross Continent MBA Program has given me a solicitation.

I forgot to mention that Indiana also sent me something regarding its online program.

In addition to emails/mails from MBA programs, I also received solicitation from MIT SCM program and Northwestern MS degree in Predictive Analysis. I can understand SCM from MIT since that is what I want to do post grad, but the MS in Predictive Analysis came out of nowhere. But that is from Princeton review in which I did signed up for and they might send out additional graduate degree info besides those of MBA

I got two more emails in the last two days from notable schools, and no extra ones from Denver.

1. Duke University for the MBA for working professionals.

Their admissions staff is coming to DC this week and they will be at some real nice restaurants! Bad part is that it's during lunch time and I'm still a mile away from both locations they'll be in DC...

2. Chicago Booth for the Evening/Weekend programs

I didn't think that UChicago even had to send an email to prospective applicants for their part time program. It's arguably the best in the US.

***

Is it not uncommon for top schools to send mass emails? Whether this is the case or not, is this also a year when MBA applications are going down nationally and then these schools are sending these emails in an attempt to match last year's app total?
