from x to y for parallelism. A is not parallel - emphasizing to expand. B has an extra 'then' - incorrect. C and D have got 'from x and y'.

E is the most parallel - emphasizing.. Expanding

Is "emphasizing" and "expanding" gerunds in this sentence?

Yes, lakshya14, these two -ing words in choice (E), reproduced below, are acting in the capacity of nouns, each answering the what as the object of a preposition, and can therefore be called gerunds. These nouns fit the expression from A to B. I have taken the liberty of boldfacing the gerund phrases.

In an effort to increase profits, the company moved from emphasizing its chemicals business to expanding into high-growth pharmaceuticals and futuristic biotechnologies.

Well done in spotting the gerunds. Thank you for pointing them out to others.

in choice b, "itself " is not idiomatic
"then" is wrong.

In an effort to increase profits, the company moved itself from emphasizing its chemicals business to expand into high-growth pharmaceuticals and futuristic biotechnologies.

(A) itself from emphasizing its chemicals business to expand "emphasizing" is not parallel to "expand". Also, the company itself (seems to imply physically) did not move. Eliminate.

(B) itself from emphasizing its chemicals business then to expanding Unnecessary use of "then" - we already know that a prior state of being is being described by the use of "moved from". Also, the company itself (seems to imply physically) did not move. Eliminate.

(C) from an emphasis on its chemicals business and to expanding "emphasis" is not parallel to "expanding". Unnecessary conjunction "and" - we already have a "from...to" structure. Eliminate.

(D) from an emphasis on its chemicals business and to expand Unnecessary conjunction "and" - we already have a "from...to" structure. Eliminate.

(E) from emphasizing its chemicals business to expanding Correct answer - above errors are rectified and no new errors are introduced.

Hope this helps.
