I've heard much that you must have a specific and believable short/long term career goals, but reading this article about 17 Stanford students, some of their goals really sound vague and fluffy (save the world type). So I guess what's most relevant is really your background, not your goal?

The impression I got from Stanford was that they wanted you to tell them your actual goal in life..not just 'investment banking is practical because I'll get enough $$ to pay back my student loans', but I've always wanted to do [this thing that I am actually really passionate about, regardless of how conventional or non-conventional that might sound]

cool, and I understand you have to look at their background and goals holistically. Still, some goals sound very vague.

Stanford is pretty unique. They have a really different class profile than many other business schools, and when they ask what are your goals REALLY, then they mean it. for one person it could be "become CEO of Apple" for another it could be a vague-seeming idea about bringing a certain social change to a certain area. However, even for the "vague-sounding" goal, it is a way of portraying a dream that is more than a dream (meaning the candidate will have the background to make that goal believable). So it's not like you are gonna have people who worked 6 years coding write "I want to found the most innovative PE firm in history" if they don't have the background for it!!!
