meal cost=42
range of tip = from 15% of 42 to 20% of 42 = 6.3 to 8.4

So range of amount paid= 42+Tip= 48.3 to 50.4 ::: That is option E

Calculate a 15 percent tip.
$42 * 1.15 = $48.30

The tip is more than that.

You have just eliminated answers A, B, C, and D.

The ranges are in ascending order. The highest amount in those four answers is the right hand side of D.

The higher end of D is not greater than 1.15($42) = $48.30.

The Answer is E.

I did not check, but if you wanted to, the total amount paid must be:

1.15($42) < x < 1.20($42)

$48.30 < x < $50.40

Answer E

Bunuel - I think you might have listed this question twice in the 500-level list. I didn't see the other one until just now. Here is the link to what I think is a duplicate

Here, Given that,
meal cost=42
range of tip = from 15% of 42 to 20% of 42 = 6.3 to 8.4

So range of amount paid= 42+Tip= 48.3 to 50.4
That is option E

You can eliminate four answers in about 10 seconds.

Think about what a 15 percent tip would be. Ten percent = 4.20, 5 percent = 2.10, added is more than $6.

That should signal to calculate just a 15 percent tip:

$42 * 1.15 = $48.30

The tip is more than that.

Answers A, B, C, and D are eliminated.

The ranges are in ascending order. The highest amount in those four answers is the right hand side of D.

The higher end of D is not greater than 1.15($42) = $48.30.

Only Answer E's lower range value fits.

Answer E

I did not check, but if you wanted to, the total amount paid must be:

$48.30 < x < $50.40

If the tip was 15%, then the total amount, including the tip, is 1.15(42) = $48.30.

If the tip was 20%, then the total amount, including the tip, is 1.2(42) = $50.40.

We see that the total amount of the meal, including the tip, was between $48 and $51.

Answer: E
