After receiving a 25% discount, Sue paid $180 for a lawnmower. What is the original price of the lawnmower before the discount?

A. $215
B. $220
C. $225
D. $240
E. $245

We can create the following equation in which n = the original price:

0.75n = 180

n = 180/0.75 = 240

Let x = the original price (BEFORE the discount)

If Sue received a 25% discount, then she paid 75% of the original price.
In other words, she paid 75% of x
We're told she paid $180, so we can write: 75% of x = $180
Or we can write: 0.75x = 180

ASIDE: One approach here is to divide both sides by 0.75, but this can be a pain for many students.
Another option is to convert 0.75 to a fraction, and then go from there.
Here's what I mean.
We get: (3/4)x = 180
Multiply both sides by 4/3 to get: (4/3)(3/4)x = (4/3)180
Simplify: x = 240

Answer: D

Sue has paid after getting a discount of 25% which means that she has paid 75% of the original price and that is $180.

=> Original Price * \(\frac{75 }{ 100}\) = 180 [75% = \(\frac{3}{4}\)]

=> Original Price = \(\frac{(180 * 4) }{ 3}\) = $240.

The fractional equivalent of 25% is ¼. Therefore, it is safe to target the answer options containing numbers which are divisible by 4 i.e. options B and D.

Since the other options will yield decimals upon dividing by 4, a whole number like 180 cannot be obtained after subtracting 25% from the numbers. Answer options A, C and E can be safely eliminated.

25% of 220 = ¼ of 220 = 55.

Therefore, final price after the discount = 220 – 55 = 165. But, Sue paid $180, after the discount.
Answer option B is not our answer and hence can be eliminated.

The correct answer option is D.
