The value of (2^3/4 + 2^1/2 + 2^1/4 + 1)(2^1/4 - 1)

= 2^(3/4+1/4) + [-1][2^3/4] + 2^(1/2+1/4) + [-1][2^1/2] + 2^(1/4+1/4) + [-1][2^1/4] + 2^1/4 - 1
= 2 - 2^3/4 + 2^3/4 - 2^1/2 + 2^1/2 - 2^1/4 + 2^1/4 -1
= 2 - 1
= 1

I'm thoroughly confused by this problem for some reason.
What exponential rules did your use?

Just know the rule to multiply and add exponents. When same base is multiplied, in this case 2, you can just add up their exponents
