Re: In 1970, company X had 2,000 employees, 15% of whom were women, and 10 [#permalink]
Hi Bunuel,

This question is not hard at all but I think people will choose answer A instead of answer C.

But answer A is a trap answer and we should not forget to multiple 71 with 100% to get 7100.

once you see the diff of 2160 and 30... we know 30 x 70 = 2100.. definitely 70X times with 100% means 7000%...

In 1970, company X had 2,000 employees, 15% of whom were women, and 10% of these women were executives:

=> 2000 * \(\frac{15}{100}\) = 300 (women) => 300 * \(\frac{10}{100}\) = 30 (women executives) - Old value

In 2012, the company had 12,000 employees, 45% of whom were women, and 40% of those women are executives:

=> 12,000 * \(\frac{45}{100}\) = 5400 (women) => 5400 * \(\frac{40}{100}\) = 2160 (women executives)- New value

Percent increase : \(\frac{{New value - Old value} }{ {Old value}}\) * 100

=> \(\frac{{2160 - 30} }{ {30}}\) * 100

=> 7,100

A. 71
B. 710
C. 7,100
D. 71,000
E. 710,000

1970

Women = 300 ; Women Executives = 30

2012

Women = 5400 ; Women Executives = 2160

Hence percentage increase in number of women executives from 1970 to 2012 is \(\frac{(2160 - 30)}{30}*100 = 7100\)% , Answer must be (C)

Re: In 1970, company X had 2,000 employees, 15% of whom were women, and 10 [#permalink]
1970

\(Employees = 2000\).

Women Employees = \(2000*\frac{15}{100}\) => \(300\).

Women Executives = \(300*\frac{10}{100}\) => \(30 Executives\).

2012

\(Employees = 12000\).

Women Employees = \(12000*\frac{45}{100} => 5400\).

Woman Executives = \(5400*\frac{40}{100} => 2160\).

% increase in women executives from 1970 to 2012= \((2160-30)*\frac{100}{30} => 7100% increase\).
