The right answer is option A.

The original sentence is correct. I can't see any obvious errors. The sentence talks about two contrasting qualities of the people of the Ancient Assyrian Empire. They were renowned warriors and rightly, one wouldn't normally expect a warrior to craft art, but these people defied this logic and were able to craft some of the best-preserved ancient art. The original sentence presented expressed these qualities of the people as a contrast. The verbs were and crafted are rightly parallel. So A is the right answer.

In B, the use of past perfect tense had been is incorrect and unwarranted.
In C, there is no contrast. The qualities of the people are contrasting, hence a contrast is required. and is not appropriate.
In D, there is an S-V error. was should be were since it points to the noun warriors.
In E, there is a parallelism error. were and crafting are not parallel.
