(A) were renowned warriors, although they also crafted => "S-V, although S-V" shows two contrasting ideas. Logic is ok here.
(B) had been renowned warriors, although they also crafted => problem with the past perfect. Past perfect is not necessary here.
(C) were renowned warriors, and also crafted => Active and Passive are combined with the same Subject with "and" sounds not okay here. Tenses and form must be consistent (please correct me if I am wrong)
(D) was renowned warriors, although they also crafted =>"was" is singular, not correctly refer to "soldiers"
(E) were renowned warriors, but also crafting => comma - ING modifies precede clause. I see no reason to put them here.

=> IMO Correct Answer is A

The right answer is option A.

The original sentence is correct. I can't see any obvious errors. The sentence talks about two contrasting qualities of the people of the Ancient Assyrian Empire. They were renowned warriors and rightly, one wouldn't normally expect a warrior to craft art, but these people defied this logic and were able to craft some of the best-preserved ancient art. The original sentence presented expressed these qualities of the people as a contrast. The verbs were and crafted are rightly parallel. So A is the right answer.

In B, the use of past perfect tense had been is incorrect and unwarranted.
In C, there is no contrast. The qualities of the people are contrasting, hence a contrast is required. and is not appropriate.
In D, there is an S-V error. was should be were since it points to the noun warriors.
In E, there is a parallelism error. were and crafting are not parallel.

The people of the ancient Assyrian Empire were renowned warriors, although they also crafted some of the best-preserved ancient art.

(A) were renowned warriors, although they also crafted
(B) had been renowned warriors, although they also crafted
(C) were renowned warriors, and also crafted
(D) was renowned warriors, although they also crafted
(E) were renowned warriors, but also crafting

The people of the ancient Assyrian Empire were renowned warriors, although they also crafted some of the best-preserved ancient art.

Quote:
(A) were renowned warriors, although they also crafted
- correct
Quote:
(B) had been renowned warriors, although they also crafted
- Past Perfect is no justifiable; one action is not taken part prior another one
Quote:
(C) were renowned warriors, and also crafted
- redundancy
Quote:
(D) was renowned warriors, although they also crafted
- S-V agreement error
Quote:
(E) were renowned warriors, but also crafting
- "but" is parallelism marker, nothing prior "but" is parallel to participle "crafting"

Option(A) is correct

The subject (people, which is plural) must agree with the verb (were, which is plural).
The two verbs (were and crafted) should be in the same tense since both happened at the same time in the past.

A.This correct sentence is written such that the subject and verb agree

B.had been renowned is improperly constructed in the past perfect tense, implying that the Assyrian Empire stopped being known for renown warriors before its people crafted well-preserved art

C.The comma improperly splits the sentence, creating a comma splice

D.The subject (people, which is plural) does not agree with the verb (was, which is singular)

E.The use of the participle crafting is improper and should be replaced by a verb
