I got a 640 in my last mock (V32 and Q45)
I gave another mock today and got a 650 (V38 and Q42)

I increased 6 points on verbal and went down 3 points on Quant. Thus went up 3 points overall, but still only went up 10 points on the overall score?
How does that work?

Hi bakshiaashna,

Go through the tables here. Each score has an associated percentile. For example, you went from V32 (66%) to V38(85%), but you also went from Q45 (54%) to Q42 (42%). Your total score, meanwhile, increased from 68% to 73%. For comparison, if you had gone from 630 to 640, the increase would have been "only" 2%, but your 640 to 650 is +5%, which happens to be the biggest "jump" on the current scale.

That said, try not to worry about the scoring. Focus on improving your scores, and prioritize the official practice tests.

Hi bakshiaashna,

As has been said, you really should not get bogged down worrying about the specifics of GMAT scoring. Rather, focus on the things you can control, such as improving your quant and verbal skills. Do you need any advice on how to improve those skills? In the meantime, you may find it helpful to read the following article:

Your score is correlated with the sum of your subscores, but it isn't a perfect correlation. So, if your subscores sum to 87 for example, you'll usually get a 700, but you could also get a 690 or a 710. You could also get a 700 with a slightly different sum of subscores. The GMAC hasn't told us exactly how the overall score relates to the subscores, so anything more than that is just guessing. But it looks like both of your scores do match the chart, so I don't think anything's gone wrong - that's just how the test happens to work.
