The administration of the university has enacted a policy that organizations cannot fail to provide food at an event if its attendees are given to understanding via advertising that there will be food.

A. if its attendees are given to understanding via advertising that there will [/u]– ‘given to understanding’ is wrong

B. have been given to understand from advertisement that there would --- there is no subject for the verb ‘have been given’. It can’t be an event.

C. having been given to understanding via advertising that there must ---1. been given to understanding’ is wrong 2. Having been given modifies the event because there is no comma before having

D. having been given to understand via advertising there will –' having been' wrongly modifies an event

E. if its attendees have been given to understand from an advertisement that there would – The correct choice by POE

All of these choices feel REALLY crappy. Am i missing something here?
E seems right, but only because it's the least bad option.

daagh : I agree with your explanation but i just have one doubt in option E.
What is the subject of the word "its" in option E?
The sentence uses the word "organizations" so it should be "their" and not "its".

This was the reason i eliminated option E.

Please suggest.

I do agree with your explanation, sir! But why would is used at last of option E. Please explain this part.

'its' is referring to the 'event', which is the correct and nearest noun as per the option / sentence.

The referent for the singular pronoun "its' is the 'event' and not organizations.

I can't see much import between the near-certain 'will' and the not so - certain 'would' in this context. So E is passable.

OFFICIAL EXPLANATION


We can pretty much tell what the sentence is trying to say, but there's probably a better way to write it. "Are given to understanding via advertising" is pretty clunky.
Choice (B) doesn't make sense: it is missing the word "attendees," so the verb phrase doesn't connect to anything.
The same issue is present in (C) and (D), so we can eliminate those. Left with (E), we can verify that it is indeed better than (A). The past tense in "have been given" makes more sense than the present tense "are given" in choice (A): before the event, the attendees were given reason to believe there would be food. Also, "given to understand" is idiomatically correct, whereas "given to understanding" is not. "[F]rom an advertisement" is also stylistically better than "via advertising."

The correct answer is Choice (E).
