Answer - D) 65%

Approach - Assume the total number of boys and girls to be 300. Since the number of girls is twice the number of boys, the ratio of girls to boys is 2:1, which means the number of girls is 200 and the number of boys is 100. Since 70% of girls and 55% of boys did not get admission, it means that 140 girls and 55 boys did not get admission. So 195 students did not get admission.

(195/300)*100 = 65%, hence (D) is the correct answer.

Difficulty Level - I thought it was quite easy. Once you can recognize that values can be assumed, the question can be solved within a minute and a half, or faster.

The number of girls appearing for an admission test is twice the number of boys => The percentage of girls taking the test/total people taking the test is 2/3 and the percentage of boys taking the test/total people taking the test is 1/3.

Percentage of people who doesn’t get admission= (1-0.3)x2/3 + (1-0.45)x1/3=0.65 or 65%

We can let the number of girls = 120 and the number of boys = 60. Thus, 120 x 0.3 = 36 girls get admission and 60 x 0.45 = 27 boys get admission. Thus, the percentage of candidates who get admission is:

(36 + 27) / (120 + 60) = 63/180 = 35%

Therefore, the percentage of candidates who do not get admission is 100% - 35% = 65%.

Answer: D
