Error tested : Pronoun Ambiguity

(A) it might have been expected for it to rise

(B) it might have been expected to rise --> Correct, rectifies pronoun ambiguity

(C) it might have been expected that it should rise

(D) its rise might have been expected --> Awkward

(E) there might have been an expectation it would rise --> Awkward

Hence, B.

The electronics manufacturer announced that while earnings grew by 5% in the last quarter, revenue decreased whereas it might have been expected for it to rise.


(A) it might have been expected for it to rise.......second use of 'it' incorrect

(B) it might have been expected to rise- 'it' correctly modifying nearby 'revenue and construction is also fine - correct

(C) it might have been expected that it should rise......again double use of 'it' - incorrect

(D) its rise might have been expected....'its' is not parallel with ' revenue'

(E) there might have been an expectation it would rise - Awkward construction

The electronics manufacturer announced that while earnings grew by 5% in the last quarter, revenue decreased whereas it might have been expected for it to rise.


(A) it might have been expected for it to rise - here, the demonstrative pronouns 'it' can have two possible antecedents: manufacturer and revenue.

(B) it might have been expected to rise - has no error. hence, (B) is the right answer choice.

(C) it might have been expected that it should rise - when we expect an event to occur, we assign a greater probability to our expectation of that event. 'should' is a mere suggestion word and hence cannot be used to highlight an expectation.

(D) its rise might have been expected - the possessive pronoun ''it's'' has two possible antecedents: manufacturer and revenue.

(E) there might have been an expectation it would rise - the pronoun 'that' is missing here.
