I am planning to apply for Masters in Financial Engineering or Quantitative Finance in various universities across Europe.
They are mostly technical universities, such as ETH (Zurich), EPFL (Lausanne), KTH (Stockholm). So they are NOT Business Schools.

In most cases, they accept both GMAT or GRE, so I have to choose which one to take. I am confident I can get a good score, since I have a good amount of free time to spend on the test prep.

Do you think there is any preference over the type of test in this case? Some people say GRE is more indicated for technical schools, and some people say that a high GMAT will make me stand out anyway.

Some points to note. Business schools are specialized graduate schools. Most of the graduate programs are in technical fields such as science and engineering and the humanities, such as English, History, etc.

The latter programs will only take the GRE, while the business programs prefer the GMAT. Lately, many business schools now also accept the GRE, but some business schools prefer one test over the other. If the program indicates no preference, then you can take either test.

If the majority of programs you are applying to are "technical" programs, then I strongly suggest taking the GRE. Taking the GMAT would be wasteful and will not make you "stand out".

Hi Adrian007,

The simple answer is that the Schools probably do NOT have a preference; if you are a strong overall applicant and have a competitive Score in one or the other of the two Exams, then the Schools would probably want you to apply. Ultimately, the most direct source for an answer to this question is each School's Admissions Department - so you might want to reach out directly and ask. The Admissions Teams would likely be happy to answer any questions that you have.

Before I can offer you any additional advice for your studies, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on your timeline and your goals:

1) Have you done any studying for either Exam before? Have you taken any practice Tests for the GMAT or GRE?
2) Do you have a Score Goal for either Exam?
3) When are you planning to apply to School? If it's sometime relatively soon, then what are the exact application deadlines that you are facing?
