If you give proper notice and your boss screws you after you leave, you should sue the pants off of him.

In all likelihood, if you are admitted, I believe the most a school will do is contact a recommender to see if they wrote the recommendation. After being admitted is not a time where schools should be gathering new information.

He could say that the recommendation was not written by him. (he can't really say that, because he has to check a box saying that he wrote it, right?)

If my admission offer gets taken back, the schools really won't tell me why, so I would have no proof that my boss screwed me over.

I don't get it, if he wrote your recommendation, wouldn't he already know that you plan on leaving the firm?

In any case, I suspect that recommenders, if verified, are verified before an offer of admission is made. You can quit whenever you like after that has been done, and I strongly suspect nothing would happen to your offer.

I personally am debating when to leave. I'm thinking of giving notice June 1st, with my last day as June 15. I suppose that would depend largely on what schools I get accepted to though and when they start. It seems like a lot of them start in August, or at least have events and useful things to go to then. A couple of schools even offer brush up courses prior to the start of the quarter, which frankly, I'd probably need in some areas. I'd like to have a good month to myself before school starts, maybe head down towards Mexico and hit up some the caves I never got a chance to dive. I've also debated doing a shoe-string thailand trip, but I'm not sure how the whole "Hey honey, I'm about to blow $100,000 on grad school and before that I'm going on vacation" thing would play out :)

Proposal: GMATClub Class of 2009 Summer reunion? Who's in? :)

Summer before school starts, say July 2007.... I meant Class of 2009 as that is what class we are part of.

Possible destinations:

Vegas (always a classic, but if we go, we stay at the bellagio, no argument)
Mexico (cheap depending where you go)
My house in the bahamas (free to stay, but limited space)

Here's the whole story.

This woman I work with is leaving on maternity leave and probably will not be back until June-July.

My planned departure would be end of April (assuming I get in), and they will be really busy. I never said when I would leave, but like I said before, I told him this rec letter was for admission in Fall '07. (I never said when I would leave, but I implied (sort of) that I would be leaving in the Fall '07.)

Some schools do the background checking (Wharton, Haas) after you get admitted, so my boss may screw me over then.

I don't think they can rescind an offer because your boss changed his mind and decided after the fact that you are a jerk. Doesn't work like that. Background checks just verify factual stuff... not opinions and the like.

That added nothing to this thread. You seemed like a cool person, a good judge of character from your other posts, but you just threw that out the window.

You don't know my situation.

I don't think Mark is saying that you are a jerk. He is just saying that even if your recommender tells the school that you are the biggest jerk in the world AFTER you have been given an offer, the offer still stand.

I do agree with Mark on this. Furthermore, I would think if this recommender gives such a comment, the school is likely to contact the other recommenders to hear what they say. From there, the school will have a more complete and accurate picture of the situation.

Sounds great........ but bahamas for me..... no problem with the space.. I am sure some of us can make a tent and live on the beach.

Provided your house is close by the beach

I'm probably in, but there may be some possible complications. First is that I'm still going back and forth between submitting for the Wharton/Lauder program. If I got in to that (dream) then I'd be gone by May or something. My other potential problem is that I can't just give notice or anything like that; I need to wind up my business or decide how I can continue to run it while at school. It's a pretty big task either way.

I love Vegas. I used to go a lot (like every 3-4 weeks), but I haven't been going that often lately. I used to go to Mexico quite often also, but that was in my younger days. I have never been to the Bahamas.

I am leaning towards keeping it, but I would need to hire someone reliable (and cheap) to take care of day-to-day stuff here locally while I am away. If I get in to Berkeley then it would be a piece of cake (possibly UCLA as well, and Stanford but that would be a miracle).
