Re: Sociologist: The more technologically advanced a society is [#permalink]

Pre-thinking:

Conclusion: The more technologically advanced a society is, the more marked its members’ resistance to technological innovations.

Premises on which it is based:
i) The more technologically advanced a society is, the more aware its members are of technology’s drawbacks.
ii) People realize that sophisticated technologies deeply affect the quality of human relations.

Basis this, we can understand that because technologically aware people understand the drawbacks of technology (that they affect human relations), technological advance leads to resistance to technological innovations.

Let us examine the answer options.

(A) It is a conclusion supported by the claim that people realize that sophisticated technologies deeply affect the quality of human relations. It is not a conclusion but a premise that supports the conclusion. Eliminate.

(B) It is offered as an explanation of why people’s resistance to technological innovations is more marked the more technologically advanced the society in which they live is. Correct answer. The statement supports the final conclusion that, "The more technologically advanced a society is, the more marked its members’ resistance to technological innovations".

(C) It is a premise in support of the claim that the quality of human relations in technologically advanced societies is extremely poor. While it is a premise, it does not support the claim that, "the quality of human relations in technologically advanced societies is extremely poor". Such a claim is not made at all. Eliminate.

(D) It is a generalization based on the claim that the more people resist technological innovations, the more difficult it is for them to adjust to those innovations. There is nothing about "adjusting to innovations" in the passage. Eliminate.

(E) It is an example presented to illustrate the claim that resistance to technological innovations deeply affects the quality of human relations. It is not "resistance to technological innovations" that affects human relations but technologies themselves. Eliminate.

Hope this helps.

Re: Sociologist: The more technologically advanced a society is [#permalink]
Picked a) because I the same words were used in the first two sentences. But, it's a clear B. Best thing to do here is to re-arrange the passage and it becomes clear what the question asked about is doing:

Sociologist: The more technologically advanced a society is, the more marked its members’ resistance to technological innovations. This is not surprising, because the more technologically advanced a society is, the more aware its members are of technology’s drawbacks. Specifically, people realize that sophisticated technologies deeply affect the quality of human relations.

P: The more technologically advanced a society is, the more aware its members are of technology’s drawbacks (this is the sentence in question)
P: Specifically, people realize that sophisticated technologies deeply affect the quality of human relations.
C: The more technologically advanced a society is, the more marked its members’ resistance to technological innovations.

The claim that the more technologically advanced a society is, the more aware its members are of technology’s drawbacks plays which one of the following roles in the sociologist’s argument?

(A) It is a conclusion supported by the claim that people realize that sophisticated technologies deeply affect the quality of human relations.

(B) It is offered as an explanation of why people’s resistance to technological innovations is more marked the more technologically advanced the society in which they live is. CORRECT

(C) It is a premise in support of the claim that the quality of human relations in technologically advanced societies is extremely poor. X

(D) It is a generalization based on the claim that the more people resist technological innovations, the more difficult it is for them to adjust to those innovations. X

(E) It is an example presented to illustrate the claim that resistance to technological innovations deeply affects the quality of human relations. X

Sociologist:

This is not surprising, because the more technologically advanced a society is, the more aware its members are of technology’s drawbacks. - A reasoning given to support the claim or emphasise the claim.
Specifically, people realize that sophisticated technologies deeply affect the quality of human relations. - An example to support that reasoning that shows the results of technological advancement.
