Hey guys. Accepted my R2 admit yesterday. However, I'm moving to a new role within my firm which will definitely help me both in terms of skills and post PGP career. Any leads on how to draft a deferral request e-mail and what all points will make sense to mention? Should I also attach the new role offer letter in the email?
Also - is ISB very strict with deferrals due to new roles/professional opportunities?

Any advice on this?

Thanks Nikhil

Hi am0804

You can always request a deferral, although there is no guarantee that ISB will provide it. ISB evaluates deferral requests on a case by case basis, and generally, people who request early have a greater chance of securing a deferral. In your letter, lay out clearly the reasons for asking for a deferral. You can attach the offer letter for a new role, and also explain why the new role is so important for you (i.e. what it will help you learn or experience that you have not done so far, and how it will help your career) and why you did not see this role materializing before applying to ISB.

While ISB will evaluate your reasons and possibly even grant a deferral, as you can understand, they will give priority for deferrals to people who are facing dire life situations over people who need more time to cater to professional growth/opportunities in their current organizations.

Hi,

Any leads on how to draft a deferral request e-mail and what all points will make sense to mention?

You need to explain - a) how at this moment , your new responsibility has more benefits for your career than pursuing PGP b) You will anyway leave the job after one year, so how do you justify leaving job after one year when your company has invested in you for a new role/responsibility c) How will ISB gain by giving you a deferment. Try to project a win-win-win situation.

Should I also attach the new role offer letter in the email?

Yes, you should.

Is ISB very strict with deferrals due to new roles/professional opportunities?

MBA colleges in India are more of business units than educational institutes. No one wants to loose customer. So they don't hesitate in giving deferrals if reasons are 'ok'.

JyotiA

Can you tell us a little bit more about your goals and what you are trying to get out of an MBA?

Hi Jyoti,

Your career and your ambitions are more important than the years of experience, background and choice of college. There are many candidates from PSU background who have successfully graduated from ISB after 10+ years of work experience. And there are examples of people who have decided otherwise. So it completely depends upon the person - her career goals, financial position, family dynamics, current job satisfaction etc. It will be good for you to have discussion with people of similar backgrounds and stories.

But without considering these, an MBA is always worth doing!

Hi Jyoti,

Knowing your aim to move into operations or in IT in Private sector, it is but even more important to get MBA degree. And if ISB is the only option you have right now, do exercise that option. If you have thoughts of getting into some other college next year, the increasing work experience will bring even more diminished return to invested time and money. So given the information, it will be wise to pursue PGP from ISB.
