Kirk sent $54 to the newspaper dealer for whom he delivers papers after deducting a 10% commission for himself. If newspapers sell for 40 cents each, how many papers did Kirk deliver?

(A) 135

(B) 150

(C) 160

(D) 540

(E) 600

Solution

    • Let us assume that kirk delivered x papers.
      o So, total revenue from the sell of paper \(= $0.4x\)
    • He Kept 10% commission for himself and gave $54 to the newspaper dealer.
      o It means, 90% of \(0.4x = $54 ⟹ 0.9*0.4x = 54⟹ x = \frac{54}{0.36} ⟹ x = \frac{5400}{36}= 150\)
Thus, the correct answer is Option B.

.9x = 54
So, x = 60
Each paper price is 40 cent.
