Re: Paleontologist Stephen Jay Gould has argued that many [#permalink]
I think the answer is C. Auxiliary verb 'are' does not need to be repeated.

Re: Paleontologist Stephen Jay Gould has argued that many [#permalink]
Lets simplify this sentence.
Many biological traits are not X,modifier but Y.
Now remove not...but part.
Many biological traits are Y.

No problems right??...So 'are' doesnt need to be repeated.
C it is.

A can't be the answer as Stephen has not argued abt two different things but two different points abt the same thing.

A due to their enhancement of reproduction or survival, but that they are
B due to the reproduction or survival they enhance, but they are
C because they enhance reproduction or survival, but
D because they enhance reproduction or survival, but are
E because of enhancing reproduction or survival, but are

this one is kinda tough. I go for D. I think are is needed after but to refer to biological traits b/c Biological traits are not x but are y.

For whomever asked about A. A has "their" in it. Their doesn't refer correctly to biological traits.

I chose C for this very same reason. Do we know what the OA is?

C because they enhance reproduction or survival, but
D because they enhance reproduction or survival, but are
E because of enhancing reproduction or survival, but are

vote: C

Originally thought D...but the idiom should be "not x...but y" which makes me believe the answer is C.
