I picked A...."not only ...in terms" parallel with "but also in terms of " though seemed awkward! None of the other choices seem fitting in...???

A has incorrect subject-verb agreement.
Quality surpasses, not "surpass"

"E"

E is clearer.

take the "of" clause away from the sentence and you will be directed to the right answer.

Re: The quality of early pieces of blown glass excavated in [#permalink]
My take is on E.

The quality of early pieces of blown glass excavated in Italy and Western Europe far surpasses that of pieces from the eastern Mediterranean, not only with regard to the variety of shapes represented, but also in terms of decorative techniques and functionality.

- "quality" requires singular verb "surpasses"
- "that of " is || to "quality of"
- "Not Only......But Also"
- "with regard to" is || to "in terms of"

A. by far surpass those of pieces from the eastern Mediterranean, when regarded not only in terms of
B. surpasses by far those from the eastern Mediterranean, with regard not only to
C. far surpass that of pieces from the eastern Mediterranean, not only regarding
D. far surpasses that of the eastern Mediterranean, with regard to not only
E. far surpasses that of pieces from the eastern Mediterranean, not only with regard to

E.

AB out b/c we are comparing QUALITY not the pieces. So we need a the singular "that"

D: distorts the meaning "far surpasses that of eastern med"??? we are quality of pieces to quality of other pieces, this sentence illogically compares quality of pieces to Eastern Mediteranean.

C: "not only regarding... but also in terms" is not ||.

E: compares differences of like with like correctly. ||ism is maintained w/ Not only X but also Y

got it down to D&E...but I picked D....

I thought the "that" in "that of the eastern Mediterranean" in D is modifying "pieces" in the nonunderline section...but I guess I am wrong...
