Hi
I have been a member of gmatclub for quite some time now - around 2 years. However, I had to come to the US for a project assignment and almost lost touch of gmatclub as well as my MBA idea! Now that I am considering my MBA seriously, I need some help from you. I am in a place where there ain't any talks about MBA and even if there are, I am not aware of. Hence it becomes difficult for me to get any guidance. I have come up with a list of questions pertaining to my intention of applying to a B school. I have made it precise and mentioned about SAID only. You may still generalize about all fits for me in Europe.

1. As mentioned in my previous post, my GMAT score is 690. Do you think it is a good enough score to go ahead and apply?
2. I might be interested in changing my filed to Marketing. If not, I might stay in IT itself but would like to go into the Oprerations/Business aspect of IT. Is SAID a good place to go for these areas?
3. I have a 3+ years of IT experience with good extracurricular activity record and some community service too. Does this meet the criteria of admission @ SAID. Rather, does this make my case strong enough or do you think I need more experience, since I read that the average work experience @ SAID is 72 months.
4. Do you think I should take some assistance in essays/applications from any consultant? If you know of some place, please share that with me.
5. Presently I am in the US on a project assignment. However, I want to apply for B-schools in EU because of the 1 year program (less time and less money spent). Do you think this is a good enough reason for anyone to apply for B-schools in EU?
6. Lastly, it would be great if you can share with me, any related information which might be useful for me in my applications etc. And any forum, etc. which you might have used when you had applied for your MBA.

Hi I dont know about Said , but London Business School (which is considered a notch above Said as far as MBAs go) has a GMAT mean of 680 odd. A score which you have comfortably achieved.

As far as other application aspects are concered, there is never really a 'set criteria' for applications, it always depends on how good a case you can make for application in your essays.

My advice : If you are serious about it and know what exactly you want out of it, Go for it... Our own 'B-School application' forum is a good place to get started for applications. Its got tons of free resources to get your started with your applications.

Thanks for the quick response!
I am aware of LBS's better grading vis-a-vis SAID. My reason of having Oxford as one of the Target B-schools is because of its 1 yr MBA.
Also, sometimes I get disheartened when I see that most of the applicants (in this forum or otherwise) are a lot more experienced than I am. Do you think I should wait for some more time to make my resume/profile more competent WRT the other candidates?
I would want to apply ASAP since I do not want to spend time if I have my goals clear. I would, however, gain more experience, if this is what the school demands of me.
Please suggest.

I can't comment specifically on the requirements of Said, since I have no experience with it. Having said that, I would like to reiterate that you must have a few things thought about before you start on an application :
- What are your goals post MBA (realistic goals)
- What have you done in the past that links to these goals (convincing activities)
- What type of life experiences have you had ? Do you have convincing and interesting things to talk / write about when I ask you about your 'leadership experience' , 'international exposure', 'extra-curricular activities'

If you feel that you have this then 3 years is heaps of work experience. No offense to Said, but it is regarded as a rung below INSEAD and LBS in Europe, hence if your basics are strong, you stand a chance for sure ...

One thing to consider would be Said, like some other, 2nd tier schools (Yale is a good American example, in that its a top uni but a rung below in terms of business schools) is trying to improve its B-School credentials and hence look favorably on 'higher' gmat scores. But again, the basics of your application are far more important.

In fact the first confirmed admit this year at gmat-club was someone with a 690. He got into Columbia .. so there ..

Thanks!! That was helpful. I'll start drafting my goals and listing down my career path. I think gmatclub is a good pool of knowledge for beginners like me.
