Remember, no matter how hard the previous question or section was, when you have answered it, move on. Don't give up. And finish the test.

When I finished the test I was exhausted, I gave myself an estimate just as the scores were coming up, the actual score was 80-100 points higher than my estimate.

TIME MANAGEMENT! Do not be afraid to guess and move on if after 2 minutes or less you are completely at a loss. If you have prepared well enough, most likely the questions thereafter you should be able to figure out. Leave more time for the ones that you can get, as opposed to the ones that will just suck time and energy away from you--and in all likelihood you will get wrong anyways.

Emoryhopeful once told me that he would actually give no more than 20 seconds to question types that he knew he could not get and then he would move on. Those quetion types were the ones reserved for 50+ scorers, such as crazy combinations, permutations, etc. He ended up with a 49 in Q if I am not mistaken, and a 760 overall. It was good advice that actually helped me out yesterday (details regarding that to come later).

Re: Going for it tomorrow morning (first official attempt) [#permalink]
So I'm officially a member of the 700 Club (and I ain't talking about the Pat Robertson kind)!!!!!!

750

46Q, 47V!

I didn't quite make the 80% quant threshold, but 79% is close enough for me!

The AWA was great. If I don't get a 6 I'll be flabbergasted. Finished that in about 50 minutes. Took a 2 minute break then on to the quant.

Now the quant was interesting. And by interesting I mean ridiculously impossible!

I was blown away by how difficult it was, but as others have said, I guess GMAT goes easy on the grading at the actual test. And maybe some of the crazy ones were the prototype questions for future use (if so, I feel bad for future test-takers!). I finished with about 3 minutes left. So, all in all, I was ridiculously excited by my quant score. I said going in that I wanted a 46, but was pessimistic about achieving it. Well, I achieved it!

The verbal section, obviously, was quite easy. It was the easiest verbal I've done yet. Except for one question that I realized I screwed up after moving on, I wouldn't have been surprised if I got none wrong. Obviously not the case, but I'm far from displeased! I finished this section with 30 minutes left.

Anyway, thanks so much to everyone for your encouragement and special thanks to the genii over on the math forum who have helped me bring my quant up from a 32!!!

Now the real fun (read: torture) begins.

Thanks!

I'm applying the fall, so 2009.

HBS and MIT are my top choices, then probably Kellogg 1-year (any idea if this is harder to get into than 2-year? I have undergrad business degree). Still thinking about possible back-ups. Maybe Yale.

Congratulations bro! :-)

Awesome score. Very nice verbal, too :-)

Haha watch out for the AWA. I wrote killer essays, but only got a 5. Meh. The AWA's don't count for anything anyways.

Can't give too many tips on verbal because it more or less just comes naturally to me (I didn't study at all). But I will say three things:

1) In RC and CR they give a lot of teaser choices that are very tempting to use. For instance, an RC question will ask "Which of the following can you infer to be true based on this passage?". Some of the choices they give be undoubtedly true, much more so than probably the correct answer, but if that choice is not explicitly referred to in the text then it is unlikely to be the right answer. They try to trick you with these "obvious" answers that are really not covered in the passage. Watch out for those tempting traps. Of course, topics that aren't covered in the passage can be the correct response to questions like "Which of the following, if true, would best support/weaken the author's hypothesis?".

2) I find it very helpful to read the question first in CR questions before reading the passage. This helps me go through the text with a critical eye for exactly what it is I need to get out of it. It helps you wade through the BS of the passage.

3) In SC, if you have to guess and you can narrow down to 2-3 choices, generally choose the simplest of all the answers.

4) Edited extra tip: Don't use the verbal section of this forum too much for SC! I would go through it from time to time and found many of the SC questions to be very inferior and many of the OAs to be quite debatable. Stick to reputable texts, like the OG and, apparently, MGMAT SC. SC questions are all about experience, and seeing poor questions can really screw you up.
