Re: GMAT scores and application timing [#permalink]
I ended not going anywhere do to some personal issues so I'm back this year, bigger and badder (in a good way lol)

And about studying for the GMAT and doing essays together, the advantage is that, you usually get bored with either so it makes it more interesting when you mix them up. While doing gmat I used to take a few days off, work on my essays, then go back to gmat. Ofcourse after doing the gmat exam, I was 100% on the essays like a rabid wolverine. 8-)

JL, Toefl scores take much longer to come out (took 5 weeks for mine to get published and sent to schools).

And plus you don't know your score after the exam unlike GMAT so you cant post anything on the online application.

Mid-Sept might be a little tight for R1. I did the toefl exam before the gmat exam. Unlike the GMAT you dont need to get the highest possible grade, just enough to meet the requirements (usually 110/120 for the iBT for top schools).

Worse case scenario, if the toefl scores don't reach the universities on time, you can try to get it waived. That would need proof like working in a multinational, or studying in English in undergrad.
