Re: Whats the Deal with Kaplan CAT??? [#permalink]

Can the people behind Kaplan CAT software really be so ignorant as to publish such lame CAT software...

In my prep I have been doing very well on GMAT prep, MGMAT, etc...

However, when I go to my Kaplan CAT I score 540, 560, 550... wtf??? I hear other people having the same experience, whats the deal with Kaplan, and why don't they try to find better CAT algorithms?

Has anyone done reallly well on a Kaplan test the first time they took it?

Most of the people have the same experience as you had. I personally scored on the real test 50 to 100 points more than on Kaplan CATS.

In my opinion the reason is simple: Kaplan offers its students to take a free CAT test before starting the courses, and has a policy stating that "if you score less on the real test than on the diagnostic test, you can get your money back". To avoid this to happen frequently, it seems quite logical from a Kaplan point of view to have an algorithm that score lower than the real thing.

So don't get impressed by your somewhat low score on Kaplan CATs.

Yeah, the Kaplan CATs are notorious for scaring the crap out of people. Best bet is to take GMATPrep and Princeton Review. Those were the most accurate for me.

i concur...<600 on all the kaplan tests i took, >700 on all the official guide tests i took (with approx. the same # of right vs. wrong answers!), and 750 on the real thing.
