You have a very good profile and I definitely encourage you to apply.

Now as for your specific queries;

1) Is there any negative impact of not having international experience?
International experience is definitely a plus. But there will be other dependencies as well. The adcom will consider all of those parameters. For example, it is very much possible that you work with a product company for which, the development center is in India itself. It may very well be possible that you may not be required to make international trips but you interact with the offshore offices on a regular basis. This also gives you idea about the work culture of the people these, though not directly. But your work was such. The adcom would take all that into consideration.

2) I have interest in entering a career in finance but considering my experience in IT industry I am in two minds. Post MBA, Is it better to stick to my Industry or a career in finance a viable option?
For that you need to be very aggressive about it. You already have 6 years of experience are now are looking for a role switch. Start taking interest in the financial aspects of your projects. Try to learn fro the people in the company. You need to show the adcom and later the company you would join that you have interest to shift to finance for a long time. There are a myriad of things yoy can do at ISB itself. But that will come later. Now, whether you want to do all that is your call. I suggest you follow what you want to do. A switch is viable and a vertical rise is anyway on the cards. The decision is your's to make.

Dear thinkISB,

Thanks a lot for your quick and informative reply. I thought of doing one year MBA either in India or Europe considering my profile but many are advising me to go for a 2 year MBA. Is my profile more suitable for 1 year MBA or is it better to go for 2 year MBA? What is your view on this? Also can you please mention both positive and negative points in my profile?

I would again urge you to think about what your goals post MBA are. Now from the info I have about your profile let me weigh a 1 year MBA vs. a 2 year one.

1 Year MBA
a. You have already spent 6 years in the industry and the opportunity cost of not working will be relatively higher compared to that of a younger candidate.
b. For experienced candidates who have had good exposure to the industry, a 1 year MBA sans the lengthy internship makes more sense.

2 Year MBA
a. If you are looking for a domain shift into finance and have little exposure to it, an internship in that domain is one of the best ways to facilitate your switch. Only a 2 year MBA can give you that.
b. A 1 year MBA gets over even before you know it (metaphorically speaking of course). The 2 year course will give you much more time for concepts to sink in.

Now each argument here can be countered.

Now, your profile.

Work ex- I need more solid information. For example, you are a consultant. What are the sectors you specialize in? What is the depth of specialization? What are your transferable skills? All of these are questions you must display.

Acads - Average. Undergraduate scores not very impressive. But again those were 6 years back. So weights attached will be less. The GMAT is good. That makes it average.

Diversity - @ work; need more info, answer the above questions.
Chess is a definite positive. It shows a prolonged involvement, which is good.

Experience: By April 2011 => almost 8 years In IT services
GMAT: Yet to give, targeting 750
Worked in: TCS, HCL, Tech Mahindra
Onsite Experience: 1.1 years in US & Germany
Awards: Several from all employers and some appreciation mails from client
Extracurricular Activities: Nothing Significant

Queries:

Ans: It's nothing like the lack of people management is ruining your profile. But as you are an IT professional with 8 years of work experience, the adcom will look for a growth progression. You are expected to take up newer responsibilities and expand your job role tree (please follow this link to know better: https://www.thinkisb.com/blog/2010/05/15 ... -stronger/) as you mature. A candidate as experienced as you will generally be expected to have good people management experience. Having said that there can be different types of profiles altogether. So, it's up yo you to project to the adcom how your roles have extended.

2. Do the appreciation mails from client count in my profile or only the awards where I have the certificate count?

Ans: Yes. They definitely do. In fact, I would advise you to get one of your recommendations from a client.

Ans: No.

4. What are the things I could improve upon in my profile?

Ans:
a. A clear growth progression to be chalked.Follow the job role tree approach.
b. Definitely some diversity. Try focusing on 1 or 2 interests and build on that. You need not show achievements. The adcom wants to know what kind of person you are. You must not have worked 16 hrs a day. Beyond your working hours, there must have been something, a hobby or some involvement that you may have been interested in. Mention that.

Got a question regarding the details in the ISB Application.

In the Employment/Work Experience Information we have Job Responsibilities (max 100 characters each) & Job Achievements (max 100 characters each) details.

I feel that this is a very important section and should have all the achievements at work place.

Will it be ok if we repeat the same information in the application essays.
Or do we have to mention the best of the achievements in the essays and only put the second level achievements in the job achievement details.

Hi,

I gave the GMAT Today and got the score of 680 ( Q 48, V 35)
I have 7.5 years of experience and I am currently working as a QA Manager in one of the Leading MNCs in India.

I have 3 Years of International experience working for my company's clients in US.

Is my score good enough to apply to ISB or even other schools?

I think I can score better as midway during my verbal my computer crashed and I was provided another machine within 2-3 minutes. Although the time was not reduced but my concentration wavered due to which I believe I goofed up in the questions which I attempted immediately after the technical glitch.

Please advise

Hi krooks1980,

GMAT Score is just a part of the application. Factors such as leadership, team skills, and diversity also affect your candidature. A score of 680 with 7.5 years of work-ex is not bad. Although there will be much more info that we'll need to comment but you can offset this by highlighting another aspect of your candidature like project management, international experience, leadership experience, etc.

I wrote GMAT this October and got 690 (Q50, V33). Was not very happy as got many 720+ in MGMAT. However, ... I am applying for R2, anyways.
I am from typical IIM pool (Indian IT male ) . I have 10+ years of extensive IT experience.
Last 5 years in Indian IT firm ( 2 years as onsite project manager in HSBC , London - strong interaction with HSBC country teams and HSBC managers and have earned excellent reputation , other 2 years as project manager from offshore , 1 years as project lead/ business analyst in USA), other 3 years in top IT consulting firm ( worked as team lead and technical architect ), other two-three years with three other companies in product development, and services as developer . Did engineering from NIT surathkal with average marks 65% - First Class. have average or below average extra curricular activities ( won few skits programs during college, participated in NSS during school days)

Any comments on my chances to ISB are much appreciated!!

I have a very serious concern here.
While filling up my application form, i gave a wrong email id of my evaluator.
Post clicking the "Submit to ISB" button, i realized the email id has changed and i gave the wrong email id. I know ISB will try to contact on the same id and it will bounce back.
Can anything be done?

CS Engineer University of Rajasthan
Schooling : ST. Xaviers
X : 70 %
XII : 63 %

I have had a very diverse internation experience while in college and some more wort mentioning experience during my school days.Just to give a brief

1. I captained Xaviers cricket team and represented Rajasthan in under 18 Tournaments.
2. Captain of school house
3. I was a member of worlds largest youth run organization called AIESEC , I lead a team of 20 students and worked with various NGOs in Jaipur.
4. I went to Poland in 2006 to represent India in an International AIESEC conference.(Only 60 students were selected out of 110 countries)
5. I was the country coordinator for AIESEC UK and lived in London while working with all the universities in England.
6. I worked with UN on a project which involved teaching high school students in Eastern Europe.
7. After my graduation I deffered my joining at accenture for a year and started a venture with some internationals in India, we designed, manufactured and sold contemporary furniture , in less than a year we expanded the operations to 4 cities.
8 Since last one and half year I am working at accenture as a quality analyst, in just one year I got promoted.
9. I have also attended various leadership sessions conducted by TIE, cocacola,ABN AMbro etc.

I am sure my score is not at all competetive for ISB, but still I want to give it a shot. Though reappearing for the test is definetly on the cards.But still I wanted a fair openion, will a profile like this can enter ISB with this score.
