Wharton - Accepted, Matriculating (R2)

*It was a very difficult decision between Tuck and Wharton. Tuck was amazing, and had the closest and most interesting community of any school that I visited. My decision to go to Wharton was based on the availability of resources, career services, and the extensive alumni network. I would be happy to discuss my essay/interview experiences for Wharton/MIT/Tuck/Columbia - please feel free to send me a message.

My personal advice to all MBA hopefuls is to take your time with the essays - don't rush them just to make the deadline. Throughout the last three years, I learned a lot about writing effectively and "selling" an image that is tailored to the strengths of each MBA program to which I applied. Be honest with yourself and do your homework - where does the school place the majority of its graduates? is this area consistent with your background? if not, what qualities do you need to exhibit in your writing/resume to showcase your ability?

Good luck, and don't give up. A rejection is just another opportunity to improve your candidacy.

700 GMAT (Q=46,V=40)

3.3 U.G. GPA in Psychology
3.6 Graduate research in Psychology.

I decided to abandon my pursuit of a PhD, to pursue an MBA in Finance. I had to be extremely careful with my essays and the essays were by far the most difficult aspect of the application. I feel that many schools rejected me with just a glance, whereas others took the time. Here are the results. All of these programs were in the 3rd or 4th round.

NYU Stern: Rejected without interview
UW Foster: Rejected without interview
ASU W.P. Carey: Accepted with interview (G.A., scholarship $$$)
Fordham: Accepted with interview (Skype)
SDSU: Accepted without interview

I will be attending W.P. Carey for many reasons. Primarily, it is a great program, especially for the cost. Secondly, the interview was a fantastic experience and its clear they are VERY committed to their students' success. If anyone wants information on the program, send me an email.

GMAT 710
UG: 2.7 at a top 40, took one quantitative course to develop alternative transcript (A)
WE: Approx 3.5 years at matriculation in risk consulting, international
Age: applied at 25, received decisions at 26
non-minority
EC: Less in university, more afterwards
Recs: current supervisor and a senior colleague, one high-risk-high-reward and the other straight-edge

Columbia ED
Two interviews - quite testy ones - and deferred, CBS expressed interest in a GMAT retake but the score remained the same followed by a DING

HBS R1 (pressured to apply, didn't want to)
DING w/out interview

Stanford R1
DING w/out interview. Left me cold.

Chicago Booth R1
Very good interview and WL followed by a DING. Their WL hurt more than any ding.

Berkeley Haas R2
WL w/out interview followed by an on-campus interview with a 2nd year student - it worried me, because he came from a country that has a huge political problem with my area of employment, even though I'm detached from the politics followed by a DING. I had to cynically laugh when I got my third WL, but when I visited I knew that Berkeley could really be a golden era for me. Didn't happen.

Down but not dead. Re-applying.

UPenn masters in CS, undergrad in a university in Taiwan
GMAT: 760 (Q: 50, V: 44) AWA: 5.5
EC in UG: Tons of leadership positions in Taiwan
EC after UG: Stern biz plan competition, American Cancer Society (all in New York).

Admitted:
Stern + scholarship, McCombs
Waitlist then denied:
Kellogg
Denied with interview:
Wharton
Denied without interview:
Sloan, Haas

I've accepted Stern's gracious offer and did not expressed interest in getting off Kellogg's wait-list. With no surprise I got dinged by Kellogg later on.

Good luck to future applicants. All I can say is that the application process is a tough yet rewarding experience!
