Hello all,

First time poster here. I am concerned about my situation:

Economics Major - SUNY
GPA (Major) 3.9 (Minor) 3.9 (Overall) 3.8
Gmat (attempt 1) 580 33q/36v
Gmat (attempt 2) 590 35q/36v

I am applying to MS Finance/Accounting programs and am not sure if having a good gpa in a fairly quantitative major will make up for my poor gmat score. I am planning on retaking the gmat again but i will not rush into it like I did previously, so I may have to send these as preliminary scores. I would appreciate any thoughts on how I might fare against admissions and what I could do to better improve my chances. Thanks in advance.

You have not discussed your preferences - which program are you targeting? There are certainly decent MS Finance programs out there which will be satisfied with your GMAT score, even though it is low to get into top-tier programs.

Your high GPA will not compensate for a low GMAT quant score, but will carry more weightage. If it is the top programs you want to aim for, retake the GMAT, target a 650+ score (closer to 700 the better) and then apply.

It depends on where you're applying.

For some schools a 590 will be prohibitory despite your high GPA. For other schools, it won't be a problem. Take a look at the mean GMAT score for the schools you're targeting.

If you're targeting top 10-20 schools, you will increase your odds significantly if you boost your score by 100 points.

In my opinion, schools value GMAT > GPA.

Sorry about the lack of specificity. I am targeting Villanova, Ohio State, GWU, Baruch, and American. I guess these are middle tier programs.

If you think you can get a higher score, retake the GMAT. Not only will it help your application chances, but it can also increase your scholarship chances, and be a veeeery worthwhile endeavor!
