Male, Brown, 27 y.o., Indian citizen
College: Undergrad in Civil Engineering from top 3 Indian engineering school (IIT), Masters in econ from top 2 econ school in India
Work experience: 3.5 years in investment banking in Mumbai, India. 2 years working as an analyst in the leveraged finance team at Nomura (private debt for LBOs). This was a middle office role and I was supporting the EMEA team based out of London. 1.5 years as an analyst at a no name American boutique investment banking firm focusing on M&A and private fundraising for growth stage tech companies across the US and India. This is a front end role.
Extracurriculars: NA
Stats:
GMAT: 330 (169Q, 161V)
Undergraduate GPA: 6.94/10.00 Master's GPA: 75%
Goals/Info:
Overall Statement: Ever since my undergraduate days at a school with an active culture of entrepreneurship, I have always been intrigued by startups & the tech industry. As a tech focused banker, I have experience of analyzing tech companies qualitatively & financially which I feel is a good segue into an internal role at a growing/established tech company
Reason for MBA: To pivot to a strategy/finance/PM role at a growth stage or large tech company. I'm also interested in investment management roles but since these roles are hard to come by I will focus on tech recruiting.
Why now: I have strong experience of analyzing tech companies from the outside and feel like this is the right time to transition to an internal role so I can directly contribute to the growth of a tech company.
Target schools (Applying in R2 this year): Kellogg, Haas, Ross, Anderson, Tepper
What are my chances at the schools I'm targeting, am I being too conservative or ambitious? Would you recommend targeting other schools given my background and goals ? I'm also really interested in recruiting for venture capital but realize it is super hard to break into for internationals and people from schools except HSW so I've given up on that. I am not interested in recruiting for consulting/IB

Hey there,
Beginning your evaluation with your academic background, your grades in your most recent degree, your masters, is pretty competitive and should allow you to target most B-schools worldwide. In addition to this, the fact that you have studied from all the top colleges in India, gives a major boost to your profile as schools tend to pick out applicants from the top schools of each country. You can complement this further by talking about projects, assignments undertaken, and also the experiences gained.
In addition to this, another significant aspect that schools focus on is extracurricular activities as they are looking for a holistically developed profile. Hence, it is essential to shed some light on the endeavours taken up at any clubs, associations, sports, fest, or events you managed or participated in during your undergraduate. Volunteering initiatives, certifications, or internships undertaken during the course of your study would also count towards your extracurricular initiatives.
Moving to your professional front, you hold 3.5 years of work experience in Investment Banking which is pretty impressive, but it does fall short since an MBA programme requires an experience of 4 to 5 years. Also, since most of your competitors will be from the Big 4 firms, you need to stand at par with the competitors by leveraging the learnings from your previous roles. Make sure you explain and highlight the major projects of your work and how these experiences helped develop and further groom your skills and knowledge. Highlight why you chose these particular organisations and job profiles, how you have gone beyond the role, any initiatives you took, and any kind of impacts created.
Coming to your GRE, 330 is pretty competitive and opens the door to all the top business schools in the world.
Talking about your school choices, Kellogg, Haas, Ross, Anderson, Tepper all come under the competitive category where your chances of acceptance will be around 70%. While you have chosen a good set of competitive schools, you can also look for few dream schools.
Here are some schools in the dream category that you can be looking at:
US: NYU, Duke, Michigan, Columbia
SINGAPORE: INSEAD
EUROPE: LBS, HEC Paris
AUSTRALIA: UNSW Sydney, University of Melbourne
Lastly, while you have a good profile, you need to be aware that you will be facing competition from equally good or even better profiles, which is why, you need to complement your profile with a strong application that includes essays, letter of recommendation, statement of purpose, and resume that highlights all your strong suits, gives reasoning for the weaknesses and displays how you’d be a good addition to the cohort. As a matter of fact, your application can boost your chances of acceptance by 3x!
All things considered, If you want to know more about how you can showcase a strong profile with lesser work experience and meet the deadlines right on time, I would suggest you to BOOK A FREE CONSULTING SESSION with one of our consultants who can help you chalk out a winning strategy to bagging an admit from all your target schools.
