Re: With an increasing demand for highly skilled workers, this nation will [#permalink]
Somebody please rate my essay:

The argument claims that since new positions in technical and professional occupation are increasing rapidly and the government is proposing to cut down the funds to aid in education in near future, there would soon be a serious shortage of labor in response to the increasing demand for highly skilled workers. Stated this way, the argument manipulates the data to present a very distorted picture of the situation. The argument is based on many assumptions, for which there are no evidences.

First, the argument claims that the government is proposing to cut down the funds to aid education. The argument incorrectly assumes that the government would actually cut its aids, given that it is just a proposal. Knowing that there is demand for a particular set of skills, the government may choose to withhold the idea of cutting down if not supporting the education in these fields. The argument also assumes that government funds are the only way to grow the labor force for these skills. It completely ignores that roles of bank loans, college sponsorship and self funding in such a scenario. Had the argument considered these factors and provided justifications to these questions, the argument could have been better backed up.

Second, the argument claims that the nation will soon face a serious shortage of labor. In claiming so, the argument takes a stretch. The argument fails to acknowledge that if at all, such a need arises, the government can relax the expat work policies and invite expatriates to work in this country.
Lastly, the argument assumes that the growth of the labor force is not enough to meet the growth rate of the vacancies. This may or may not be true -we don not know this for sure. The argument does not present any data about the proportion of students who are soon going to be graduating in these fields. The argument would have been more substantial, if we were given any data to support the claims.

In the conclusion, the argument is flawed for various reasons as stated above. To assess the merits of this condition, it is essential to have full details of the contributing factors.
