Hi Experts,
I'm looking for your advice on whether I should take Rotman's offer or wait for an year betting on a top 15 ranked U.S school.
Background: Career: Indian IT Consultant, 8 years experience Age: 30 Years GMAT: 710 Under-graduation: Engineering Degree with not so impressive GPA Domain: Technology Consultant Writing & Interview skills: Very effective Interest: MBA General Management/Marketing Ambition: Marketing for technology products
As everyone is aware that Rotman is known for its Finance education and most if its recruiters will be from Finance co's. Is it worth for a General Management education seeker to sit in a finance oriented group to save an year.
Pro's of Rotman: 1) Location Toronto: Wife would be able to take a full time job in Toronto. Also Toronto has many tech companies for my future 2) Good reputation of Rotman in N.A and internship 3) Starting in August 2013 so will save an year of my life
Con's of Rotman: 1) Known for Finance 2) Canada offers fewer opportunities compared to US. 3) Placements: Not sure how many tech companies in Toronto pick their interns/staff from Rotman
My 2nd optionis to continue in my tech role for an year more and shoot for the top 15 US schools. There is no guarantee that I will get there but at least, I won't lose anything big other than being an year late for my dream career. In this 1 year, I'm planning to have a few management related certifications under my belt.
Please help me take this tough call as I'm equally balanced as on today and time is running out for me.

If someone's fixed on Canada and MBA specializing in GM/Marketing, is Rotman his best bet in the current situation considering that Ivey's session will start in April ?

At a distance, your CV seems OK but not great. Remember that, in particular, you will be competing with people in the same category. In your case the dreaded Indian/IT/male crowd. If I can be brutally honest, Rotman seems as one of the best schools that you realistically will be able to get admitted to. I belive that if you wait for a year, the schools in the US where you have good chances are 2nd or 3rd tier US schools which, in my opinion, are as good as Rotman and not more.
Having said that, Rotman is a very underrated program. It has a fantastic curriculum, great facilities, and it is in a great city in a great country. When I was discussing programs with my wife she completely opposed to move to Canada because she hates the cold weather. If it hadn't been for that, I honestly would have placed Rotman very close to the top of my list.
You should see Rotman's strength in finance not as a problem but as a great virtue. Everyone ranks programs according to their strength in finance and strategy, and don't pay much attention to the rest. Having a strong finance orientation I think puts the school in the radar.
Finally, remember that you must go to a place where your wife will be able to enjoy her life. Canada, and Toronto in particular, would simplify things since getting a visa for a spouse is straightforward and you two can also plan about staying in the long term. It is true that it limits your chances of moving later on to another country, but it depends on what you want.
