Can you get the promotion in a few months and then lateral? What's the timing on all this? If it's an either/or, I would go with the lateral move. The promotion is less important than taking a step in the direction of your ultimate career goal.

A CFA designation definitely does not hurt. As a matter of priority, I would pursue one if you feel it is valuable for your career. It will not be a major determinant in your admission to business school.

Good luck!

Promotion before lateral into S&T would probably not be feasible as the promotion would only be recognized upon my staying with my current organization / another organization willing to have me at the promoted title (which is possible). Lateraling into S&T would make me start as an analyst again, but I tend to agree that the move is a net positive if AM is my end goal. I'm sure I can explain the fact that I essentially hit the reset to show my dedication to AM.

However it is possible to get the promotion, then using my CFA L1 / L2 try to get a AM-type job at another firm / internal mobility. This is definitely a riskier option though as it's not a guarantee I get a position considering at that time I will have been out of undergrad for over 2 years with no AM experience.

Sounds like you have some great options. Please reach out to us (admissionado.com) if you'd like more detailed help. These posts are a great starting point but are imperfect when it comes to a deeper understanding of one's situation as well as an ability to properly advise.

Best of luck,
