Re: Quant Question of the Day Chat [#permalink]
for this , you have to see the number of solutions for the equation , y=( x^2-x)(x-2). This eq can be rearranged as (x)(x-1)(x-2) by taking x common from x^2-x ......... now we can clearly see that equation y= (x)(x-1)(x-2) has three solutions 0,1,2 .. so graph that cuts x-axis at three points 0,1,2 will be the best representation of the function y

option ’d’ will be the answer

There is a 10% chance of rain on a particular day. If it rains, there is a 10% chance _ that Jfon will go to school, out if it does not rain, he wil definitely go to school. What is the probability that Jon will go to school?
How to solve this usinf table? Or can this not be solved using table? Please help

D.
Why not C? Easy to test. Take a value beyond x = 2. Say x = 5.
When x = 5, y = (5)(5-1)(5-2) = 5*4*3 = a +ve value. For choice C, the y value for an x=5 is negative. Choice D is correct.

Do check out "wavy line method". The concept will be useful in this regard, I believe.

Should be "wavy curve", I guess :P

The question can be solved using table too.

y=(x^2-x)(x-2)=x(x-1)(x-2). So, y will be 0 when x=0,1, and 2, that is the curve will cut graph at 0, 1 and 2. Only C and D left........... Next, when x>2, all three x, x-1 and x-2 will be positive, and product of three positive is positive. Thus after cutting x-axis at 2, the line should give y as positive always..... OR You could just take x as 3, and see that y=3*1*2=6. D gives you positive value while C gives a negative value for y at x=3...answer is D
