Hi Akhil,
Below is my approach.

A. Sports equipment, like other consumer products, is experiencing a drastic decrease in sales-- Sports equipment is correctly compared to other consumer products. 'Is experiencing' correctly refers to 'Sports equipment'. Hence A is Correct
B. Like other consumer products are, sports equipment is experiencing a drastic decrease in sales-- Sports equipment is compared to whatever 'other consumer products ARE', hence Incorrect
C. Sports equipment is experiencing a drastic decrease in sales like other consumer products are It seems like 'sales' is being compared to 'other consumer products' Hence ruled this out.- Incorrect
I think (think) if there were a comma before 'like' this option would have been correct.
D. Sports equipment, as other consumer products, is experiencing a drastic decrease in sale'as' cannot be used to describe likeliness. Incorrect
E. Sports equipment, like other consumer products are, is experiencing a drastic decrease in salesSame as B. Incorrect

Hi Akhil
Option A : Sport equipment is compared with Consumer products - Correct
Option B : Unnecessary "Are". Sentence is incomplete - Incorrect
Option C : Should be completed with "Like other consumer products facing" - Incorrect
Option D : "as" cannot be used for noun comparison - Incorrect
Option E : Again "Are" - Incorrect

Hope it helped

Cheers

Hi Akhil,

Dont get confused, its very easy.Just remember the following rule.

whenever we use LIKE for comparison , It should followed by a NOUN.
COMPARISON ---> LIKE + NOUN

In given answer choices only option A follows this rule and it correctly compares "Sports equipment" with "Other consumer products"
In other answer choices LIKE is followed by a "Clause", Hence all other are incorrect.

A. Sports equipment, like other consumer products, is experiencing a drastic decrease in sales

B. Like other consumer products are, sports equipment is experiencing a drastic decrease in sales

C. Sports equipment is experiencing a drastic decrease in sales like other consumer products are

D. Sports equipment, as other consumer products, is experiencing a drastic decrease in sale----- When we use AS for comparison , It should followed by A CLAUSE , however in this sentence it is followed by a noun.

E. Sports equipment, like other consumer products are, is experiencing a drastic decrease in sales

Hope this helps you....

This question is at least credible as a GMAT SC practice question, insofar as it revolves around the "like-as" split. For more on this, see:
http://magoosh.com/gmat/2012/gmat-sente ... ike-vs-as/

I guess what I find bizarre about the question is the content. The phrase "other consumer products" seems to refer, essentially, to everything else for sale in the entire economy. If everything for sale in the economy has experienced "a drastic decrease in sales", then that's clearly a sharp recession or depression --- then why single out "sport equipment"? In other words, in a scenario in which the entire US economy collapses, why on earth would it be important to focus on "sport equipment"? You see, something fundamental about the motivation behind the sentence is profoundly illogical. Yes, I know, the content of the sentence could be wholly vacuous, and we still could follow mechanically the rules of grammar and find an answer.

The deeper problem, I believe, is most people's fundamental misapprehension of the Sentence Correction format. I think many folks think the SC questions are primarily about grammar. Grammar is undoubtedly important, but so are idioms and rhetorical construction. Fundamentally, the most important issue on the SC questions might be logic. Logic trumps grammar. One trap students fall into is blindly following grammatical rules without paying attention to the logic of what the sentence is saying, and real GMAT regularly develops questions that punish this kind of mechanical thinking. Many of the later SC questions in the OG are precisely this sort. To this end, the content of each question must be logical and clear: every sentence must, at root, be saying something meaningful. The OG is full of sentences that are simply gems: historically informative and deeply logical. By contrast, this question predicates itself on a grammatical rule, but the fundamental logic of the sentence is highly suspect. This suggest that the creator of the question shares the same misapprehension that many students have, and in fact, this question encourages precisely the kind of poor thinking about SC that the GMAT actively discourages. Study of this question, and others like it, will not truly prepare you for the high standards of the GMAT.

Does all this make sense?
Mike :-)
