The ratio of the sum of the reciprocals of x and y to the product of the reciprocals of x and y is 1 : 3. What is sum of the numbers x and y?

(A) 1/3
(B) 1/2
(C) 1
(D) 2
(E) 4

1/x + 1/y : 1/x*1/y = 1:3

x + y / xy : 1/xy = 1:3

x + y / xy * xy = 1:3

x + y = 1/3.

A is the correct answer.
