Hello,

I'm planning on switching over to my family business a few months before R1 this year and this will be my post mba plan as well. However, I might also do some part time work on my own 1) because the family business allows me this flexibility 2) an opportunity that's not related might be available before R1 and I don't mind making some extra income.

My question is, if I don't disclose the second job in my application, will that be an issue? Is there any way that the adcoms will find out that I'm also employed somewhere else? Will this come up in the background check if I don't disclose in my application?

I'll be employed by my family and I don't want my profile to look confusing. The second job will purely be for extra income - no concrete value add in terms of post mba goal.

Hey jprincess ,

I don't think that should be an issue at all even if you disclose both the jobs.

You can mention the other thing as your hobby.

I myself was doing two jobs at the time of application and very well explained them during my application process as well as interviews.

P.S: My other job was no where related to my goals.

Thanks for the response!

It might be best not to disclose on my end. It wouldn't make sense from an application standpoint. My main concern is just that I don't want the adcoms to find out about the second job. So if I don't disclose on my application, there is no way that the adcoms will know? These kinds of things don't come up in background checks (not sure what the background check process entails)?

Hey jprincess ,

Background check is done to determine whether the information you provided is authentic.

So, they will check whatever you show them. They won't go beyond that to determine what else you do in your life.

I don't believe this will come up in any search as stated above the only thing I would pay attention to is the specific language of the honor code of the schools you are applying to. Just make sure nothing you are including or excluding flies in the face of the school's honor code

Thanks for your response! Can you clarify what you mean? Or give an example of the specific language you are referring to?

At the end of your application or sometimes at the beginning, many schools will ask you to virtually sign or acknowledge their "Honor Code" which is all about upholding integrity and information being truthful, etc. So my point is just keep an eye out for this and make sure the information you are including or excluding does not run afoul of this. Does not seem like it would but just another thing to keep a look out for. Many schools will frame the "Honor Code" as something you will have to uphold as a student which still offers some grey area for you as an applicant
