(ESR Attached) 710 on GMAT - How to Improve?

Hey everyone, I took the GMAT test today and got 710 (Q48, V41, IR8).

I'm targeting M7 schools, so I know I should improve my score to the 730+ range. I've been studying for the past 3 months, and these were my results for the official practice exams:

Practice Exam 1 (after 1.5 months): 710 (Q45, V42, IR7)

Practice Exam 2 (after 2 months): 730 (Q49, V40, IR8)

Practice Exam 3 (after 2.5 months): 720 (Q49, V40, IR8)

Practice Exam 4 (week before actual exam): 750 (Q51, V40, IR7)

With regards to exam 4, I feel like the quant score was a fluke--I somehow finished the section with ~20 min to spare (normally I barely finish on time, including the exam I took today) and the questions felt a lot easier than usual.

My questions are: Should I focus more on improving verbal or quant if I plan to retake ~1 month from now? I still don't know how the scoring system actually works, so I'm unsure which option is more beneficial. Also, should I cancel my 710 score since I'm aiming for a higher score anyways? I don't know how admissions view retaking exams and such. Thank you!

melonmash - Welcome to GMAT Club!

First, congratulations for getting a 710 on the GMAT. At this point, you probably do not need to learn any new concept; you have to fine tune the weak areas while maintaining your optimum performance at your strong areas. You should immediately purchase the ESR from those two earlier tests; the ESR will provide some great insights on your sub-sectional performance, including timing. Per the forum rules, you will have to make at least 5 posts to become eligible to attach files. That said, I believe the experts would still need to see your ESR to provide suggestions and feedback.

As the exam experience is still fresh, I would advise analyzing every part of the experience.

While you analyze the content areas that you could possibly improve in one month's time, you could pay attention to other aspects of the test-taking experience. You mentioned you finished quant with 20 mins to spare (?). That in itself is interesting, perhaps slow down, etc.

The point is that improving content knowledge in just one month would be unrealistic, you could perhaps improve on the other aspects. Consider the fact that a retake may also result in a lower score. A +-20 difference is plausible in a retake.

melonmash - V40 is 90 percentile whereas a Q40 is mere 39 percentile. Why? A verbal score of 40 and above is just very hard to get on the GMAT. Even if you get a Q50, you are at 85 percentile. That's how the GMAT works. That said, you will need to make at least 5 forum posts to be eligible to attach a file; you should provide your ESR (make sure to mask your details: GMAT ID, Name)

Hi melonmash,

Did you end up canceling your GMAT?

Regarding how to improve your score, I think that you should attempt to improve in both quant and verbal in order to maximize your score increase. That said, are you looking for advice on how to improve your verbal and quant skills?
