Total class time from 2:45 to 4:30 =>105

lecture lasted from 2:45 to 4:15 => 90 minutes

question-and-answer session lecture lasted from 4:15 to 4:30 => 15 minutes

question-and-answer session was what fraction of the total class time = $$\frac{15}{105}$$ = $$\frac{1}{7}$$

Hence option A

Solution

Given:
• A certain class, consisting of a lecture and a question-and-answer session, lasted from 2:45 to 4:30 one afternoon
• The lecture lasted from 2:45 to 4:15

To find:
• Fraction of question and answer session of the total class time
o i.e. Question and Answer session time/Total class time.

Approach and Working:
• We are given that the class lasted from 2:45 to 4:30 PM
o i.e. a total of 1 Hour and 45 Minutes.
o Converting the units into minutes we get:
 Total Cass Time: 105 Minutes (60 minutes + 45 minutes)

• Lecture lasted from 2:45 to 4:15 PM
o i.e. for 1 Hour and 30 Minutes
o Converting into minutes we get
 Lecture time = 90 Minutes.

• Therefore, Question-and-answer-session time = Class time – Lecture Time
o i.e. 105 – 90 Minutes = 15 minutes

Hence Fraction of Question and answer time/Class time = $$\frac{15}{105} = \frac{1}{7}$$

Hence, the correct answer is option A.

The total time was 105 minutes, and the lecture was 90 minutes. Thus, the question-and-answer session was 15 minutes, which is 15/105 = 1/7 of the total class time.
