Re: A poll reveals that the average (arithmetic mean) income of 10 househo [#permalink]
A poll reveals that the average (arithmetic mean) income of 10 households is $25,000. If 6 of the households have incomes of $30,000 each, what is the average income of the other 4 households?

A. $21,500
B. $20,500
C. $17,500
D. $7,500
E. $7,000

step1. 25000*10=250000 (total income of 10 households)

step2. 30,000*6=180000 (total income of 6 households)

Step3. 250000-180000=70000

70000/4=17500 avg per household income. Option C.

Solution

Given:
    • The average income of 10 households = $25,000
    • The income of 6 households = $30,000 each

To find:
    • The average income of the other 4 households

Approach and Working:
    • $25,000 = sum of the incomes of all households /10
      o Implies, sum of the 6 households + sum of the other 4 households = \($25,000 * 10\)
      o Thus, sum of the other 4 households = \($250,000 – 6 * $30,000 = $70,000\)
    • Therefore, the average income of the other 4 households = \(\frac{$70,000}{4} = $17,500\)

Hence, the correct answer is option C.

The overall sum is 10 x 25,000 = 250,000.

The sum of 6 of the households is 6 x 30,000 = 180,000. Thus, we know that the sum of the incomes of the remaining 4 households is 250,000- 180,000 = 70,000.

So the average of those other 4 households is 70,000/4 = 17,500.

Re: A poll reveals that the average (arithmetic mean) income of 10 househo [#permalink]
To find the average income of the other 4 households, we need to subtract the total income of the 6 households with incomes of $30,000 each from the total income of all 10 households, and then divide by the remaining 4 households.

The total income of the 6 households with incomes of $30,000 each is 6 * $30,000 = $180,000.

The total income of all 10 households is given as $25,000 per household, so 10 * $25,000 = $250,000.

To find the total income of the other 4 households, we subtract the total income of the 6 households from the total income of all 10 households:

$250,000 - $180,000 = $70,000.

Finally, we divide the total income of the other 4 households by the number of households:

$70,000 / 4 = $17,500.

Therefore, the average income of the other 4 households is $17,500.
