A recent census of all American females revealed that the current average age that females in America marry is 27. The average age that females have their first child is also 27. According to a census taken 20 years ago, the average ages that females married and had their first child were 23 and 25 years, respectively.

If the information recorded in the two censuses is true, which of the following must also be true about American females?

This is a must be true question because the stimulus provides only data, but no conclusions. The stem asks us to draw the conclusion. So we should let the stimulus guide our answer choices.

(A) Currently, more females are having their first child before they marry than they did 20 years ago.
20 years ago, this was the case. But if on average, females today marry and have their first child at the same age, we cannot decipher which actually comes first from the information given

(B) On average, females are currently waiting longer to have their first child than they did 20 years ago.
Well, that's true based on the information given. Whether by choice or not, this is accurate. Let's move on to check.

(C) Females today are more likely to complete their education before getting married and having children than they were 20 years ago.
The prompt gives us no information about education. Sure, this could be true, but is not supported by the stimulus.

(D) On average, females had larger families 20 years ago than they have today.
No information in the stimulus is provided about the size of a family nor can we conclude such information.

(E) Twenty years ago, most females waited at least two years after they were married to have their first child.
This is tempting. The key is here that it says 'most.' Because these are averages, we cannot rely on the answer choice that includes 'most' because the stimulus does not provide this to us. 50% of females may have gotten married at 21 and the other 50% at 25, resulting in an average of 23. This shows us that we cannot conclude that 'most' is supported by the prompt.

A recent census of all American females revealed that the current aver [#permalink]
Hi,

I marked the answer to this question because answer choice B can be easily inferred. But I am not able to understand why the rest of the answer choices are incorrect.

Below is my analysis of the answer choices:

(A) Currently, more females are having their first child before they marry than they did 20 years ago. As per the given answer choice more women are having their first child before they marry, we cannot infer this since we just know that the average age is 27 in both the cases. On the basis of average we cannot come to this conclusion. We cannot infer more wowen are having their first child before they marry. It might be the case that there are 2 equal sizes groups that balances each other.

(C) Females today are more likely to complete their education before getting married and having children than they were 20 years ago. - Nothing about education is mentioned in the passage. Hence, out of scope.

(D) On average, females had larger families 20 years ago than they have today. - Not mention of familt size in the passage, hence out of scooe.

(E) Twenty years ago, most females waited at least two years after they were married to have their first child. Cannot be inferred on the basis of data given. We are just given the average.
