A small motor uses 27/8 gallons of gasoline every 15 hours. What is the motor’s fuel consumption rate, in gallons per day?

(A) 0.225
(B) 1.6
(C) 4.8
(D) 5.2
(E) 5.4

We can use the following proportion where x = the number of gallons of gasoline the motor use per day (recall 1 day = 24 hours):

(27/8)/15 = x/24

24(27/8) = 15x

81 = 15x

x = 81/15 = 27/5 = 5 ⅖ = 5.4

Answer: E
