All private, so yes. Dental work can run into tens of thousands of dollars, is prime cosmetic work and means that people don't have teeth like English people.

A dentist friend was telling me he was able to work 3 days a week and earns enough to pay six figures in income tax per year.

Another dentist friend got his oral surgery degree and said it wasn't uncommon to earn in the six figures each month.

dentistry pays very very well in the US. however, still not as good as the ibanking/S&T/consulting/HF/VC/PE bunch. it doesn't scale up enough and really caps out at like a million or two a yr.

but you can't really compare the hours of the two (dental vs banking). most dentists i know work maybe 3 times a week - assuming you're able to open your own practice, of course

Chris Rock has a hilarious bit about being "Chris Rock"...but living next door to a dentist.

"Do you know what the white man who lives next door to me does for a living? He's a **** dentist! He ain't the best dentist in the world...he ain't going to the dental hall of fame...he don't get plaques for getting rid of plaque. He's just a yank-your-tooth-out dentist. See, the black man gotta fly to get to somethin' the white man can walk to."

it's pretty true. my buddy did his med school at northwestern, and he said these 2 doctors (proctologists - butt doctors) lived next door and across the street from scottie pippen. i'd be pissed if i were scottie.

shadow - from the dentist friends i know, the ones that work 3 days a week don't make the million dollar paychecks. those usually do surgery. but either way, the quality of life is sick compared to ibankers and finance guys.

i also know a friend of a friend, who's an anesthesiologist, and got an offer for 650k a yr with 14 weeks of vacation. sickening.
