“Two of today’s best-selling brands of full-strength prescription medication for the relief of excess stomach acid, Acid-Ease and Pepticaid, are now available in milder nonprescription forms. Doctors have written 76 million more prescriptions for full-strength Acid-Ease than for full-strength Pepticaid. So people who need an effective but milder nonprescription medication for the relief of excess stomach acid should choose Acid-Ease.”
This argument states that two of the best selling brands of full-strength prescription medication for relief of excess stomach acid, Acid-Ease and Pepticaid, has introduces their milder non-prescription form of drug in market. So people should choose Acid-Ease for milder version because Doctors have written 76 million more prescription for full strength Acid-Ease than Pepticaid. The author left out several other factors which should have been the basis of the argument and left us with minimal information to arrive to the stated conclusion. Therefore , this argument is vague and rather unconvincing.
First, the author readily assumes that there is no other mild-strength medicine for cure of excess stomach acid. This argument could have been much more clearer if it states that there is less or no mild-strength non-prescribed medicine for excessive stomach acid available or the one which are available are not successful to provide relief from a mild trouble due to stomach acid. Clearly there is no evidence and statistical data that proves that people will prefer mild-strength Acid-Ease and Pepticaid over their regular one.
Second, the argument state Doctors have prescribed 76 million more medicine for of full-strength Acid-Ease than of full-strength Pepticaid . This is again a very week and unsupported claim as the argument does not demonstrate any correlation between people who need mild-strength medicine for excess stomach acid and how mild version of Acid-Ease will be more effective based on information for high-strength version. For example , if doctors are prescribing full-strength Acid-Ease to the patients who are facing serve problems due to excess stomach acid , this can also mean that Full-strength Pepticaid is milder than full-strength Acid-Ease . So the milder version for these two drug may be similar where even milder version of Acid-Ease is more powerful in strength than what is required. This can create more problem to the patients who are looking for medications without a doctor prescription. Author fails to consider various key factors which could have been considered.
Finally, Authors fails to provide several other supporting information such as the strength of mild version . If there is any other mild version for cure of these problem available ? Whether the people are suffering from problem due to stomach acid can be cured with mild-strength medicine ? if this is a non-prescribed medicine , what are the side effects if it is taken more than what is required ? Without any answer to these question it is very difficult to support this argument and arrive to the conclusion.
To recapitulate, The argument is flawed for above mention reasons and therefore is unconvincing. It could have been considerably strengthen if the author clearly mentioned all the relevant facts such information or data showing milder version of Acid-Ease is perfect for the patient who need this and it is better and effective than what are currently available. It is essential to have the knowledge of all the contributing factors in order to efficiently analyze the argument and arrive to its conclusion. Without considering these factors, this argument remains unsubstantiated and open to debate.
