Anthony and Cindy were each given x dollars in advance to perform at a community festival. B)4y
C)5y
D)6y
E)10y

Anthony performed for 14 days meansw Cindy performed for(14-4)=10 days.

If Cindy gives y dollars to Anthony their Daily rate will be equal.It means

(x+y)/14=(x-y)/10
Solving we get, x=6y

Now Anthony's Advance is x=6y .So answer should be D.

Consider KUDOS if you like the explanation.

E. 10y

The amount Cindy has in the end is x-y dollars and she worked for 10 days;
The amount Anthony has in the end is x+y dollars and he worked for 14 days;

We are told that in this case their daily rate was the same: \(daily \ rate=\frac{payment}{# \ of \ days \ worked}=\frac{x-y}{10}=\frac{x+y}{14}\), from \(\frac{x-y}{10}=\frac{x+y}{14}\) we get that \(x=6y\).

Anthony performed for 14 days, and Cindy for 10 days. Cindy gives Anthony y dollars to make the daily rate equal.
Anthony's rate = Cindy's rate
(x+y)/14=(x-y)/10
10x+10y=14x-14y
4x=24y
x=4y

Answer = D. 6Y

.................................. Anthony .............................. Cindy

Initial Pay .................... x ............................................ x

Days worked .............. 14 ............................................ 10

Funds adjusted ........... x+y ........................................... x-y

Per day .................... \(\frac{x+y}{14}\) ......................................... \(\frac{x-y}{10}\)

Given that per day wages of both are same

\(\frac{x+y}{14} = \frac{x-y}{10}\)

x = 6y

This is a "stolen" question from OG:
Quote:
John and Mary were each paid x dollars in advance to do a certain job together. John worked on the job for 10 hours and Mary worked 2 hours less than John. If Mary gave John y dollars of her payment so that they would have received the same hourly wage, what was the dollar amount, in terms of y, that John was paid in advance?

(A) 4y
(B) 5y
(C) 6y
(D) 8y
(E) 9y

Anthony's rate = Cindy's rate
(x+y)/14=(x-y)/10
10x+10y=14x-14y
4x=24y
x=4y

Answer is (d)

I think you might've gotten your math wrong towards the end.

24y=4x; 6y=x; Answer is D
