It's E.

A & C - between is unnecessary.

B & D - doesn't sound correct.

A is incomplete. An interval requires two events / points in time and we only have one: "passing close to Earth"

B sounds as if the comet needs 76 years just to complete the process of passing close to Earth.

My choice is C. Interval between sounds great and we have two distinct events which define the interval.

D... I am just going to resort to a standard and annoying OG explanation template and say that "D is unidiomatic".

E implies that the comet changes orbit both during the 76 years and as it passes close to Earth. This is actually a valid statement, but the second part is redundant. Can't be right...

Vasild nice explanation! I got your logic that between should have 2 events/points - but still confused about B's meaning!!

Well, GMATT73 is right that "interval of" is not idiomatic (at least I think so). Maybe if you substitute "interval" with "time span", things will get clearer. So in B you would have "the time span of passing close to Earth", which lasts 76 years. I understand this as "the comet is close to Earth for 76 years and after that it's not close anymore", which is not the intended meaning of the sentence.
