Re: Braille is a method of producing text by means of raised dots that can [#permalink]

The argument can be restated as follows:
Premise 1: Braille uses raised dots read by touch,
Premise 2: A new technology can heat flat screens with Braille patterns,
Conclusion: Therefore, those who know Braille can use this new technology
Pinning the conclusion in my head helps as I go through the options. The assumption will reaffirm the conclusion by connecting Braille users with heated flat screens.

(A) Braille is the only symbol system that can be readily adapted for use with the new thermal screen.
Incorrect. The argument is about how those who know Braille can use the new technology. Whether Braille is the only symbol system or not is irrelevant.

(B) Only people who currently use Braille as their sole medium for reading text will have the capacity to adapt to the use of thermal screen.
Incorrect. The assumption should deal with whether those who know Braille can use the new technology. Whether only one group can use the technology or not is besides the point.

(C) People with the tactile ability to discriminate symbols in Braille have an ability to discriminate similar patterns on a flat heated surface.
Correct. Discriminate just means recognize. This statement makes the connection between raised dots and heated patterns on a flat surface. If those who can recognize the raised dots do not recognize the heat patterns then the new technology will fail.

(D) Some symbol systems encode a piece of text by using dots that replicate the shape of letters of the alphabet.
Incorrect. Irrelevant. We are not dealing with any other symbol systems than Braille.

(E) Eventually it will be possible to train people to read Braille by first training them in the use of the thermal screen.
Incorrect. This can get a little distracting. Remember the conclusion just says those who know Braille can use the new technology. Training is a different topic. Let's use the negation method. Even if it is NOT possible to train people in Braille using the thermal screen first, those who know Braille could still understand the heat patterns on a flat surface in the new technology. So the argument still holds.

Braille is a method of producing text by means of raised dots that can be read by touch. A recent development in technology will allow flat computer screens to be made of a material that can be heated in patterns that replicate the patterns used in Braille. Since the thermal device will utilize the same symbol system as Braille, it follows that anyone who is accustomed to reading Braille can easily adapt to the use of this electronic system.

Which of the following is an assumption on which the conclusion depends?

(A) Braille is the only symbol system that can be readily adapted for use with the new thermal screen.
--> out of scope.

(B) Only people who currently use Braille as their sole medium for reading text will have the capacity to adapt to the use of thermal screen.
--> first only is strong word. it does not have to be people currently using Braille. out.

(C) People with the tactile ability to discriminate symbols in Braille have an ability to discriminate similar patterns on a flat heated surface.
--> This assumption is necessary. If people with the tactile ability can't discriminate similar pattern, then the conclusion is not convincing.

(D) Some symbol systems encode a piece of text by using dots that replicate the shape of letters of the alphabet.
--> out of some. "some symbol system" does not need to be in our consideration.

(E) Eventually it will be possible to train people to read Braille by first training them in the use of the thermal screen.
--> the argument assumes that training is not needed.
