Re: Bricolage is an unusual art form because it is formed of [#permalink]
why not E

why do you use like ?

I feel that the sentence gives some examples so "such" seems appropriate, no ?

I would go for E

In A and B it seems to me that only the castoffs are not usually employed by fine artists whereas it should be both the knickknacks and the castoffs.

(A) because it is formed of materials such as knickknacks and castoffs
(B) because it is formed of materials like knickknacks and cast-offs that are
(C) because it is formed of materials, like knickknacks and cast-offs, materials
(D) in that its formation , materials such as knickknacks and cast-offs, is
(E) in that it is formed of materials such as knickknacks and cast-offs, materials

" not usually employed by fine artists" needs a modifier in front.
Go for B.

Re: Bricolage is an unusual art form because it is formed of [#permalink]
on reading again...

I would still like to keep such as over like...

now the problem in A is that, its an inappropriate comparison...

bricolage is unusual, why and from what?

so A, D and E set it the why piece niecely, however only E maintains the right comparison....

I change my pick to E...if there is such a thing on the real GMAT>>.

I would go for B.

I think E is inappropriate because material is repeated.

I will pick E too.

knickknacks and cast-offs are materials. Such as is correct.

celia and ajay are correct

The OA is E

"Like" is used to make comparisons involving things that are similar to, but not included in, the group being described. "Such as" is used to introduce examples of the group being described. Here, "such as" is correct.
