hmmm I kind of like these Inspirons from Dell
but why are they so cheap? are they slow also?

Do you like to use larger monitors with your laptop, or do you always just use it as a laptop? I always hook my laptop to my 24 inch screen, and the Insprions do not support a true docking station solution, so they don't work for me.

256MB is NOT enough these days... probably want at least 512 MB, if not 1GB (my work laptop got a lot easier to use after I had 1 GB installed, a T42).

Processor you probably want at least a dual core, so you can run different applications at the same time and not lock up your computer (especially if you run a movie or something in the background).

Lenovo employee website saves you at least $200-400, so that's a good thing to explore.

I'm all for portable... getting tired of the standard size of the T's, and will go for the X's soon.

Oh yeah, I have a good desktop too (could never just live off a desktop, I like to upgrade and tweak components too much), so that's what I'll use at home.

Ok, I see a lot of PC fans here. What about the Mac? No Mac fans? I personally have never really used the Mac before, but I LOVE the Apple logo that lights up when you turn it on :) It looks so cool! OK seriously, I was considering getting a Mac for B-School (Wow, I can actually say that without having to pinch myself for daydreaming!). Thoughts anyone?

@ Darden: 587 MHz is slow. And personally, I don't like the Dells. I used a Dell Latitude before I got my current laptop and found it pretty buggy. I would say go for the Lenovo. Or better still, consider the Mac like I am! Then we can still be laptop buddies :)

Interesting you mention that. In fact I saw a lot of students with Macbook air (yes the new sexy skinny one) at both Chicago and NYU during my visit earlier this month.

Guys,

I have heard that the new building will be ready for the beginning of fall term. Is it correct? Generally, it which stage is the development?

What do you guys think of the Lenovo X series? As much as I like my T60 I hate lugging it around because it's heavy. The X series is several pounds lighter, but maybe it compromises in performance and I just don't know it?

Personally, I couldn't handle that small of a screen for every day use. I also wouldn't want a laptop without an optical drive. The X300 at least has the option of a DVD drive, but because of all the new tech it uses, it is enormously expensive.

for daily portable use, the small screen is ok. I say that only because I have a bigger screen at home and a desktop. So I'll be using my flash drive or internet to transfer things between my computers a bit.

Otherwise, the size is perfect and it's very light. Was considering the X300, but it's $1K more expensive, so I'll pass for now.

Optical drive would be nice, but in the end, I can count on one hand how many times I've needed to use the optical drive on my laptop (again, I have a desktop too).

I second Kryzak - not for the specific computer but for the size and use with home PC.

I have a monster desktop built only couple of months ago and a 15.4" Dell Inspiron 6400 with 2GB Ram and and intel Dual Core processor. As much as I like it, it is way too cumbersome. Given the fact that I have a desktop, I'll probably switch to a 13.3" XPS.

Why Dell? Even though I hate the company, for decent laptops, their outlet prices are hard to beat...

$710+tax for a XPS 13.3" 2GB/ Dual Core Intel / DVD RW+ / 160 GB ... Their video resolution sucks (1280x800 only) but, this computer will only be for "office/school use" anyhow...

My recommendation,
1) for those who will have only 1 computer : go for a powerful and large screen laptop (a desktop replacement in slang)
2) for those who will have a power desktop as well : go for a portable or ultra portable depending on your budget...

my 2 cents...

Too early yet. Based on your location allow 2-3 weeks to receive it. It will be delivered by FedEx.
