Go-Getter Brews Fulfilling Life in Private Banking [#permalink]
FROM CUHK: Go-Getter Brews Fulfilling Life in Private Banking
Blooming Interest in Finance
Agnes Fong’s (QFIN 2018) interest in finance was seeded at a young age. She had always wanted to manage her own finances and those of her family. By the time she was in secondary school, she was captivated by economics and by the practicality of the subject: “I was able to relate concepts like money supply and interest rates directly to what I saw in the news. It enabled me to interpret the world.” Looking to pursue a career in finance, she enrolled in the competitive BSc in Quantitative Finance (QFIN) programme at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) Business School in 2014.

The QFIN programme is renowned for its practical curriculum and for nurturing high-calibre graduates who are adept in a variety of financial fields. It is also known for its parade of learning opportunities, which allow students to broaden their international exposure and enhance their competitive edge for the business world.

All these were of great appeal to Agnes: “As an aspiring finance practitioner, I knew having strong quantitative and analytical skills would give me an advantage in today’s increasingly globalised economy. The international experiences would also help me serve a global clientele and capture worldwide opportunities.”

Concentrating Competencies from Nurturing Grounds
Agnes soon found herself living a “fun, dynamic and rewarding” undergraduate experience. Numerous experiential learning activities challenged her to try things beyond her wildest imagination – including dancing on stage at the BA Festival and pitching to random storeowners for sponsorship for the student society. Leading a dynamic life was not an alien concept for business students: “One day, I may be studying hard for a mid-term. The next day, I may be preparing for an interview, an internship or volunteering work. It was a busy period jam-packed with opportunities for personal and career development.”

The programme was both academically and professionally rewarding. As a member of the CFA Institute’s University Affiliation Program, QFIN adopts a curriculum that is closely aligned with the real-world practice of investment management and primes students for the CFA® Program exams.

“Because of this, I was able to quickly obtain my Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) qualification upon graduation. Now, I just need to amass more work experience to become chartered.”– Agnes Fong

Gaining Depth and Complexity from New Horizons
Unlike her peers, Agnes did not join a lot of case competitions. Instead, she signed on to many programmes and trips to see the world. She spent almost half of her time traveling and studying around the world. She has toured around China to experience the business environments in different provinces. She also took on a cultural and language summer programme in France during year one and an exchange programme to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) during year two.

Agnes was particularly struck by the explosive economic growth of mainland China. “Even though I’m Chinese, I didn’t have first-hand experience of the people or the culture on the mainland. Living in Hong Kong, my perception was largely confined to what I learnt from the local news.”

She decided to figure things out for herself. Thanks to the programme and to Shaw College, of which she was a member, she interned at a financial institution in Beijing, joined a leadership programme in industrialised Taizhou and worked as a student volunteer at the 2018 Boao Forum for Asia in Hainan. Additionally, she took part in a weeklong volunteer teaching project called Rainbow After Rain in rural Guangxi, where she was humbled by the laudable dreams of impoverished students.

“All of these experiences proved what Aristotle said: ‘The more you know, the more you realise you don’t know.’– Agnes Fong

“I didn’t realise the extraordinary pace of the Chinese growth story until I visited multiple cities. And I didn’t know how abundant our resources were in Hong Kong.” This experience encouraged Agnes to pay more attention to mainland Chinese media to keep up, and to pass on what she learnt during her global escapades to other CUHK students. Her contributions to the school, including her work at the Society of Quantitative Finance, even earned her the Most Outstanding Quantitative Finance Student Award 2017-2018.

Immersing and Pulling Shots in Private Banking
Since graduation, Agnes has been following her plans to pursue a career in wealth management, with a focus on private banking. She joined a Management Associate Programme at a US bank in Hong Kong, which opened her eyes to the world of private banking as she rotated across departments: “I realised that private banking is not only an investment platform but also a conduit for providing bespoke wealth management services to ultra-high-net-worth individuals, a segment that is currently booming in Asia. The experience has reinforced my conviction to build a career in this dynamic, flourishing industry.”

Agnes said the QFIN programme has equipped her with the key competencies she needs. The technical and fundamental analysis has been useful for equity advisory. Similarly, statistical analysis and data visualisation have been exceptional for enhancing sales pitches with convincing data and graphs. With the fast-paced digitalisation of banking, her programming skills have also come in handy. “In my bank, they expect graduate analysts, or analysts in general, to carry out automation projects. The programming courses have given me the fundamental skills required.”

Agnes is now an associate banker specialising in ultra-high-net-worth client coverage in Hong Kong. She has three pieces of advice for those keen on building a career in private banking: “First, you need to assess whether you have a genuine interest in investments, for you need to keep up with the markets and advise your clients or colleagues. Second, gain as much international exposure as you can, and as early as you can, as you need to connect with clients worldwide. Third, be tenacious and never give up on your ambitions. It’s common to experience rejections. If plan A doesn’t work, you must then explore other alternatives such as plan B or plan C.”

“What doesn’t challenge you won’t change you”
To expand her worldview, Agnes is always on the lookout for knowledge. She is an amateur barista and a personal trainer outside of work. She is driven by the desire to share her knowledge about dieting (acquired while she trained for a bodybuilding competition) with other women and to learn more about foods and beverages, which can be good conversation openers.

“If the goals are not challenging enough, they won’t make you a better person or you won’t improve.”– Agnes Fong

“I like to try different new things and I don’t want my schedule to be too free. My motto is: ‘What doesn’t challenge you won’t change you.’ I always give myself challenges and work hard to achieve my goals. If the goals are not challenging enough, they won’t make you a better person or you won’t improve.”

Life, Work, Perfectly Blended
Agnes is determined to make discoveries and scale new milestones on wealth management. With her insatiable curiosity and an innate love of human connection and finance, she has blended life and work into a career that fuels each other.

“In my spare time, I like to explore alternative investments. Recently, I saw the investment value and appreciation potential of single malt whisky rise following the growing consumer base in mainland China. I’m targeting undervalued Japanese and new distilleries and learning to appreciate the drams. My initial investment is small, but upon successful profit-taking, I’ll increase my stock and scope of investment, and prepare for the time when my clients take interest.”

Young Researcher Won the Dana Meadows Award [#permalink]
FROM CUHK: Young Researcher Won the Dana Meadows Award
The Dana Meadows Award of the System Dynamics Society is given annually for the best paper by an early-career researcher presented at the annual International System Dynamics Conference. Established in 2001, the prize celebrates and recognises high-quality research in the field of System Dynamics.

Entitled “Improving Parameter Estimation of Epidemic Models: Likelihood Functions and Kalman Filtering”, Prof. Li’s award-winning paper compared the performance of different estimation methods in projecting the course of emerging infectious diseases and assessing the likely impact of policies to contain them. The judging panel picked Prof. Li’s paper “for great approachability and immediate utility to practitioners.”

Prof. Li said, “I was thrilled to win this award. Although it is a small international award with only two decades of history, it is a truly honourable moment that will encourage me to strive for more academic progress. I sincerely thank my academic committee at MIT, especially advisors Prof. Hazhir Rahmandad and Prof. John Sterman, who gave me many invaluable instructions during my PhD studies. And with this award, I am honoured to be able to join my colleagues, the list of international awardees at the Department of Decision Sciences and Managerial Economics. I believe the fantastic atmosphere at CUHK will definitely help us young researchers achieve great academic success.”

The System Dynamics Society is an international, nonprofit organisation devoted to encouraging the development and use of systems thinking and System Dynamics modeling around the world. The Society provides a forum in which researchers, educators, students, consultants and practitioners in the academic, corporate and public sectors can interact to keep abreast of current developments, build on each other’s work and introduce newcomers to the field.

Polly stated the experience of participating in the National High School Student Leadership Convention is a defining moment in her life. The experience helped her build confidence and adaptability under unfamiliar circumstances and trained herself to be decisive. On top of that, in collaboration with top students from different Chinese provinces, she learnt to acknowledge others’ talents and appreciated their capabilities.

“Studying at CUHK was my childhood dream. My father was a CUHK alumnus who had shared with me his past learning experience. My elder sister is a current QFIN student who accompanied me to tour the campus. CUHK has a spacious campus with excellent facilities that allows me to continue my athletic training.”

Finding Home for His Pragmatism [#permalink]
FROM CUHK: Finding Home for His Pragmatism
Interestingly, despite his long career in the industry, insurance was not a part of Eric’s plan growing up. His childhood dream was to be an aircraft engineer. After enrolling in the CUHK Business School, he became enthralled by the business sector; and he joined John Swire & Sons (H.K.) Ltd. as a management trainee upon graduation. With a keen interest in investment, he asked to be transferred to Swire’s insurance department, which was later acquired by the Zurich Insurance Group, where Eric has stayed for three decades since. Looking back at his decision to join the insurance industry, at a time when it was considered a “sunset industry”, Eric feels no regrets: “Insurance is a pragmatic industry where hard work counts. Maybe because I started my career in property & casualty insurance and insurance claims, I understand the essence of product design for customers. To be able to help customers manage risks and then compensate them when they suffer a loss is very meaningful work.”

Building Corporate Strength through Communication and Respect
Eric said the insurance industry needs to grow with the times and develop strong soft power. The key lies with communication and respect, and this resonates with Eric’s style, strengths and personality. He revealed that he was quite shy as a child. Yet, he encouraged himself to become a good listener and to continually make improvement. Even after becoming a CEO, Eric is still a keen learner: “Leaders must be shrewd, but that doesn’t mean there can’t be other opinions or voices. Management isn’t about following one’s impulses. You need to respect your colleagues and understand their thoughts. You must communicate well, explain your rationale and rally the team to work together in their hearts and minds.” Eric also encourages his management team to cherish internal relations and to build common goals while accommodating differences. If Eric were to find out that his actions have negatively impacted his colleagues, he would feel guilty and would immediately seek their understanding.

Respect and listening are very important to Eric Hui, whose pragmatic approach fits well with Zurich Insurance’s company culture.

Coincidentally, the Swiss insurance company also places much emphasis on corporate soft power: “Zurich is a global enterprise that embraces diverse and inclusive employee policies. Men can enjoy paternity leaves for six weeks, with some lasting even 16 weeks. The company also values flexibility and gives its staff the latitude to handle matters as they see fit.” Externally, the company is obsessed with customer experience. Every time a service is delivered, the company will seek feedback from either customers or the insurance intermediaries. This has resulted in their ratings rising year after year. It shows that Zurich’s customer-centric approach has continued to be widely recognised in the age of virtual services.

Social Responsibility and Sustainable Development Take Centre Stage
Eric’s pragmatism has not made him complacent. Instead, it has prompted him to focus on the big picture. Many years ago, Eric already saw the importance of corporate social responsibility. “Our group’s management culture emphasises thought leadership. There are always new things or new challenges emerging, which are often related to the respect for others or the environment. For example, almost a decade ago we started to compensate home insurance claimants with appliances with greater energy efficiency. We also focused on the styles and needs of younger colleagues at work, and launched a gender-neutral insurance policy with a looser definition of family/spouse.” Although the company has remained at the forefront of the industry, Eric said Zurich HK has maintained a low but solid profile in line with its pragmatic style.

Zurich is also committed to its four sustainability pillars long before the notion became fashionable in recent years. These include the sustainable development of work, investment, community and insurance products and underwriting. In addition to incorporating environmental protection elements into its own insurance products, Zurich requires its partner companies to be eco-friendly as well. If the partner company generates more than 30% of their income from non-renewable energy sources and the company shows no plan of improvement, Zurich will consider terminating the partnership. Such decision certainly has cost or profit implication, but Eric believes that aligned business priorities placing social benefits over profits is more important. Last year, Eric’s commitment to the environment saw him serving as the chairman of the Hong Kong Federation of Insurers and the Green Insurance Committee as he sought to lead the industry to contribute to society.

Looking into the future, Eric believes that ESG will be a major trend in insurance: “Insurance products must better meet the needs of both customers and society. Zurich will continually enhance its products, such as adding more green elements to its investment-linked products to offer greater choices to customers.” He said the pandemic has increased people’s risk awareness. With the emergence of new risks such as cybersecurity, there are bound to be novel demands for insurance in the years to come.

Broadening Horizons at CUHK
Eric maintains a strong emotional bond with his alma mater. He graduated from CUHK’s BBA programme in 1989 as one of the first students admitted under the Provisional Acceptance Scheme, and he returned to CUHK almost 10 years later for an MBA. Eric adores CUHK’s campus setting and liberal learning environment. He also finds CUHK’s MBA brand outstanding and curriculum perfectly complementary to his undergraduate studies.

Eric Hui (sixth from left, front row) with Prof. Charles K. Kao, then-Vice Chancellor of CUHK, and his undergraduate classmates and teachers.

Reminiscing about his time at CUHK, Eric said the experience that impacted him the most was when he served as the president of AIESEC Hong Kong: “I didn’t have much of a chance to see the world until AIESEC opened my eyes. It allowed me to meet many people and have many new experiences, including reporting to the revered business leader, Mr. Jack So, who was AIESEC’s advisor at the time. I also travelled overseas for meetings and learnt about other cultures.”

Thanks to AIESEC, Eric Hui (centre) was able to participate in many foreign exchanges during his undergraduate years.

To graduates joining the business sector, Eric encourages them to adopt a positive and constructive attitude, and take the initiative to understand the world around and enrich their knowledge: “Learning is a core component of my management philosophy. You can always learn something new each day. Do not overlook the importance of developing proper social skills while acquiring knowledge. Meet more people, and do more readings on news and economic development.”

Leading Standard Chartered to Chart New Grounds in GBA [#permalink]
FROM CUHK: Leading Standard Chartered to Chart New Grounds in GBA
Anthony’s career in banking began when he joined the IT department of a bank after graduating from The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). Having obtained a BSc in Computer Science, he had planned to develop a career in the IT industry. After a year of working, he returned to CUHK to pursue a full-time MBA programme and, upon graduation, joined Standard Chartered as a management trainee. “My experience working in the banking sector gave me greater exposure to business, and motivated me to broaden my horizons and development opportunities via furthering my knowledge at school,” Anthony said. “While I was studying for my MBA, I developed an interest in the financial sector. I joined Standard Chartered’s management trainee programme as it was very attractive to me especially with a six-month training in the UK. I’ve stayed in the industry for over 20 years since.”

Anthony joined Standard Chartered in 1995 and was relocated to Shanghai in 2006. He was then sent to oversee the bank’s operation in Taiwan in 2017, and subsequently became the CEO for GBA last year. Even though the new role comes with an array of new challenges, Anthony considers them to be opportunities to flex his capabilities. He believes that his experience in mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, along with his background in IT, are assets that will enable him to carry out his work effectively. These skills will allow him to bridge and consolidate the teams in different regions, leverage the powers of FinTech and develop more businesses in emerging fields.

Entrenched Strengths Boost Cross-Boundary Collaboration
Among banking’s many business areas, Anthony is most passionate about business development. The field demands a keen understanding of not only banking and risk management but also of the customers’ needs: “Banks have similar businesses everywhere, but localised service is only possible with an understanding of the local customer needs. That’s why frontline communication and feedback are so important.” Although Anthony possesses ample experience, he still considers it crucial to communicate with local teams. He believes this would allow him to have a more accurate grasp of local cultures and markets.

He pointed out that success in GBA hinges on cross-boundary cooperation, and he foresees that as the flow of people, capital and information gathers pace within the region, the collaboration between teams will also increase. Having served in his position for a year, Anthony said that he and Standard Chartered are ready to forge ahead. All that is lacking are the “tailwinds” of borders reopening: “GBA developments demand tremendous cross-boundary collaboration. Unfortunately, mobility is still constricted under the pandemic; we can only work with our GBA teams and stakeholders virtually.”

In the face of COVID’s impact and intensified regional competition, Anthony remains confident in the bank’s business expansion outlook. He said that GBA is a key strategic region for Standard Chartered’s business development and one that plays to the bank’s strengths: “We’ve been working tirelessly in the arena of GBA. We see an influx of new opportunities with every new policy announced. Standard Chartered is a strong team, and our Hong Kong and mainland China teammates, who have been working closely together, have a deep well of expertise. We can thus seize the opportunities and play a good game.”

Integrated Market Stimulates Service Reform
Looking towards financial integration within GBA, Anthony said the varied currencies, legal systems and tax regimes mean achieving full mutual access will take time. However, the recently launched Wealth Management Connect Scheme has revealed an important message: “It confirms that the opening of the mainland China’s capital markets is set to further enlarge.”

Anthony stressed that having an integrated market does not mean having a single market in the end. It resembles a better form of integration instead: “Take retail banking for example. When our customers cross borders more frequently, we’ll need to develop more value-adding products and services to meet their financial needs, both in Hong Kong and the mainland China. These products and services will need to be compatible with Hong Kong’s banking system and comply with the prevailing laws and regulations.” Anthony added that there may no longer be “Hong Kong clients” and “mainland China clients” in the future, only “GBA clients”.

Anthony believes that the increased flow of people, capital and information within the GBA will give rise to new product designs and cross-boundary collaboration needs.

Learning from Practice and the Real World
As he looked back at his MBA days, Anthony described the experience to be highly rewarding, especially since he could grasp the gist of a four-year programme with only two years. He is most impressed by the course on business strategy: “The professor was a businessman who shared with us his real-life cases in every class, and they were very illuminating: Why did he make that decision? What went through his mind? All this inspired me greatly and opened my mind.”

Anthony has this advice for the current students of the Business School: “When opportunity comes knocking, step out of your comfort zone with confidence and courage. Explore different business environments to open your mind. Don’t just follow the old ways but always keep learning.”

Unifying the Past and the Present for the Future [#permalink]
FROM CUHK: Unifying the Past and the Present for the Future
Cultivating Professional Strengths from Linguistic Talents
Anna never thought working in academia would be on the anvil. Growing up, she only knew she loved languages and had a flair for mastering them. She spent 7 years majoring in Russian language and literature for her bachelor’s and master’s degrees and nearly 20 years learning Japanese on the side.

Upon graduation, she worked at international trading companies and later joined the Taiwanese civil service, initially working at the Tourism Bureau of Kaohsiung City and the Transportation & Tourism Department of Hsinchu County, and subsequently at the Civil Service Development Institute, where she helped organise various kinds of training for all civil servants. Anna discovered that her language abilities not only gave her an enviable competitive edge at work, but also unlocked a far bigger world for herself and for others – a better collaboration with tourism partners, more effective training events and more fruitful interactions with guest lecturers worldwide.

“My language abilities not only gave me an enviable competitive edge at work, but also unlocked a far bigger world for myself and for others.” — Anna Hsu

While attending a workshop hosted by the Association of Talent Development, a major talent development association in the US, Anna was told by a distinguished instructor that she was one of the most impressive students she had ever met and that she looked forward to seeing her career progress. “Her words gave me an ‘aha moment’,” Anna recalled. “It inspired me to rethink my career, my life and how I could make a more significant contribution to society with my talents and capabilities.”

Orbiting Academia in Search of Career Transcendence
Recognising the limits of her impact in the “big machine” of government, Anna began mulling over a career in academia, an idea that germinated while she was immersed in scholarly activities, papers and people. She enrolled in a PhD programme in Taiwan to study human resources development and explore academia. Soon thereafter, she was invited by her previous professor to co-author a book on language policy, as he opined that her linguistic background, management expertise and research skills would be assets to the project. Together, they published a book entitled Language Management Handbook for Private-sector Industries in 2017.

This experience amplified Anna’s passion for scholarship and even professorship. However, the PhD programme she had been studying for three years proved unfulfilling, and the stability of a government job deterred her from considering a career change. “Fortunately, my parents, friends and colleagues encouraged me to follow my heart and pursue my dream.”

“CUHK’s PhD programmes offered a better pathway towards becoming a scholar.” — Anna Hsu

As Anna ruminated on her options, she remembered meeting guest lecturers from the CUHK Business School, including Prof. David Ahlstrom, at workshops and decided to explore CUHK. She was pleasantly surprised that CUHK’s PhD programmes offered a better pathway towards becoming a scholar. She finally enrolled in the PhD programme of the Department of Management in 2018. More significantly, she won the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme as the only awardee of CUHK Business School that year, a firm recognition of her academic excellence and leadership potential.

Merging Talent, Passion and Aspiration in Research
Anna picked entrepreneurial skills, passion and motivations as well as the language policy of multinational corporations (MNCs) as her research focus. Currently, she is working on several essays proposing a legitimacy-based view in employees’ compliance with language policy in MNCs.

“I’m intrigued by how organisational language policies influence the employees and their behaviours in an MNC setting.” — Anna Hsu

“Coming from an HR background, I understand it is easy to train skills but extremely difficult to cultivate passion and motivation. That’s why I want to focus on these areas.” Anna observed that although the usage of English may be “legitimate” and taken for granted in business, this common language practice may preclude some employees from fully participating in knowledge flows. “I’m intrigued by how organisational language policies influence the employees and their behaviours. For example, why is English commonly adopted as the corporate language in MNCs? Although English is a lingua franca, is it the only legitimate language in MNCs?”

She added: “I’m now studying a language behaviour called code-switching, which refers to people expressing their ideas using different languages interchangeably. This type of communication is very helpful for sharing, but some MNCs are against it. I want to show that what matters most should not be a person’s language ability but their legitimacy judgment and willingness to communicate with others by using multiple languages. Policy makers should care more about the legitimacy of English in different regions instead of just taking it for granted.”

“A professor needs to cultivate persistence and self-discipline while balancing the research, teaching, administrative work and various social services for academic citizenship.” — Anna Hsu

Transforming into a Capable and Socially Responsible Scholar
Anna could not convince her supervisor, Prof. Kevin Au, to agree to this dissertation topic for several months, because he saw the risk of delving into a less popular area. But once he did, he was nothing less than a godsend: “When it comes to personality, Kevin is a total opposite of me. He encourages me to be more agile and open-minded and always has my best interests at heart. He also taught me how to engage with scholars to build credibility and gain recognition within the academic community. I’m very grateful to have him as my supervisor and mentor.”

Through the PhD programme, Anna also experienced what it is like to be a professor: “There is research, teaching, administrative work and various social services for academic citizenship. Professors also need to demonstrate their capabilities and build their reputation through continuous journal publications, which is getting increasingly difficult, considering the limited journals and the increasing number of papers there are.”

Scholars coming from non-academic backgrounds will also need to recalibrate their mindsets: “We often work on long-term projects that take years or even a decade. It’s more about persistence and self-discipline than it is about efficiency. Not to mention the rejection rate of journal submissions is very high and can be demoralising. Anyone considering joining this profession needs to be passionate about what they do so that they can recover quickly from setbacks and keep going.”

“I want to make the best of my abilities and do research that’s meaningful to academia and to society. I also want to inspire more young students to become change-makers in society.” — Anna Hsu

Changing from Within to Without
Anna is undeterred despite these challenges: “My target and my dream is to be a ‘capable and socially responsible scholar’. I want to make the best of my abilities and do research that’s meaningful to academia and to society. Instead of burying them in written documents, I want to put these findings into practice. I also want to inspire more young students to become change-makers in society.”

Guided by a quote by the illustrious author Leo Tolstoy, who famously stated: “Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself,” Anna is continually investing in herself for progression.

Better still, she is instilling this mindset in her students and those around her: “If you don’t like to invest in yourself, nobody will invest in you. My journey has been the result of my long-term investment in myself. I believe everybody can achieve the same if they can keep persistently investing in themselves. Everybody can have incredible achievements.”

The Award, presented annually, recognises not only past and present teaching performances and achievements, but also the teachers’ leadership in and scholarly contribution to teaching and learning within and across universities. The awardees are expected to become “ambassadors of good teaching” to collectively make a real and sustained impact in promoting teaching excellence in the UGC sector.

As an alumna of CUHK Business School, I am so proud to teach and nurture our future leaders at CUHK. Over the years, I emphasise the importance of motivating students to be lifelong learners. My teaching pedagogy — Co-Creation of Knowledge, Attention, Relationship, Empathy, and Sustainable Learning (CARES) — ensures a real-life teaching and learning process that places students at the heart of the learning experience.

Seeing students have different achievements in their lives is a very rewarding experience. I am grateful that some students, after graduation, still keep in touch with me and ask me for advice about their careers, family, love relationships, and even invited me to attend their wedding ceremonies. I feel honoured because they trust me and treat me as their life coach and friend. To me, the beauty of teaching is, it is a very rewarding experience. If you give me the second chance to choose my career again, I will still choose to be a teacher, a lifelong learner.”

Anastasia, who swept a total of three ACCA awards, shared: “My 4-year PACC journey was so rewarding. The comprehensive curriculum and all-round activities led me to the decision of further pursuing accounting qualifications and professionalism. The PACC programme guided me through numerous pivotal accounting topics which substantially made my exam preparation easier, needless to mention the privileged paper exemptions that I was granted with. Notwithstanding my current role in banking industry, I was spurred by the ubiquitous usage of accounting skills in the workplace such as financial and credit analysis, risk review and compliance. Undeniably, it was tough to manage working and studying simultaneously, I am thus grateful to finish all the ACCA examinations within a year with great achievements.”

Eric Leung, PACC Programme Director and Senior Lecturer of the School of Accountancy at CUHK Business School added: “I am delighted to see the excellent performance of our graduates in the ACCA examinations. Class of 2021 Graduates Celebrate Their Precious Moments at the 90th C [#permalink]
FROM CUHK: Class of 2021 Graduates Celebrate Their Precious Moments at the 90th Congregation for the Conferment of Degrees
This year’s graduation ceremonies were divided into 17 sessions and hosted by colleges and faculties. The nine colleges of CUHK conferred the Bachelor’s Degrees on 4 November, while CUHK Business School, along with the other seven faculties, held the Doctoral and Master’s Degrees Graduation Ceremonies on 5 and 6 November.

A total of 568 doctoral degrees, 6,235 master’s degrees and 5,046 bachelor’s degrees were conferred at the Congregation. Among them, there were 14 Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Philosophy, 1,112 Bachelor of Business Administration, 95 Master of Accountancy, 280 Master of Business Administration and Juris Doctor and Master of Business Administration, 82 Master of Professional Accountancy and 476 Master of Science degrees.

Cally Chan (EMBA 2007)

At the Master’s and Doctoral Degrees Graduation Ceremony on 6 November, Cally Chan (EMBA 2007), General Manager, Microsoft Hong Kong and Macau delivered a speech to all the CUHK Business School graduates as the Guest of Honour. Cally encouraged them to “enjoy every moment no matter it’s tough or not; be grateful that we have the opportunities to grow and be stronger every day.”

Berrin Birsen Oenguen (MAcc 2021)

Berrin Birsen Oenguen, a Class of 2021 graduate from the Master of Accountancy (MAcc) programme, also represented all the graduates to deliver a speech. “One thing I have learnt in my short career so far is that it pays off to be flexible and to find solutions to make things work in difficult situations. This class of graduates has had an excellent education on that.” She concluded with a quote from the famous German poet and philosopher, Friedrich von Schiller: “Those who do not dare, dare not hope”, advising her fellow classmates to be daring and be courageous for the challenges ahead.

Here are some of the quotes from our graduates on their precious moment:

“My friends in CUHK definitely influenced me the most. Friends I met here are so kind-hearted and considerate, and they inspired me a lot. Studying in the Hotel and Tourism Management programme is the most unforgettable experience throughout my university journey. I learnt a lot at CUHK and met bunch of good classmates. I was able to improve my interpersonal skills too. Marketing knowledge is the most valuable thing I learnt in CUHK. I have never thought of stepping into the marketing industry before I took my first marketing course. Taking marketing as my minor has built up my passion, and I am determined to develop my career in the industry.”

– Johnny Tsun-lai Ho [Global Business Studies (GBS) 2021]

The GBS Programme is a fruitful and amazing 4-year journey. First and foremost, I would like to express my sincerest gratitude to Dr. Raymond Wong, our Programme Co-Director, who provided continued support and guidance. Not only did we interact closely for organising GBS events, but also communicated a lot for my personal growth and career development. With thoughtfulness and care, he is indeed a mentor, teacher and friend of mine at CUHK.

The two exchange opportunities at the University of North Carolina and Copenhagen Business School are the highlights of the programme. Gaining international exposure, sharpening my people skills and elevating my cultural literacy are the key takeaways I cherish the most.

Time management is by far the greatest lesson learnt at CUHK. With my curiosity about various opportunities on campus, I actively participated in different extracurricular activities. Managing my time well is crucial for getting the best performance across all disciplines. Moving on from studying in CUHK to working in a financial institution, time management ability becomes more significant as I have to meet multiple deadlines in a limited time.

“In my four-year journey at CUHK, I have met people from all walks of life. Each impacted my life in various ways and shaped me into the person I am today. But the people who influenced me the most in my undergraduate journey are definitely the professors at the School of Hotel and Tourism Management… The diverse and inclusive environment in CUHK prompted me to step out of my comfort zone. With the different societies, committees and activities all year round, it was easy and comforting to me to reach out and mingle with different people…”

– Sabrina Wong Hoi Ching (Hospitality and Real Estate 2021)

Is there anyone (i.e. teachers, classmates, alumni, etc.) who influenced you the most at CUHK?

In my four-year journey at CUHK, I have met people from all walks of life. Each impacted my life in various ways and shaped me into the person I am today. But the people who influenced me the most in my undergraduate journey are definitely the professors at the School of Hotel and Tourism Management (SHTM).

Approaching the end of Year 2, I felt like being caught between a rock and a hard place as I had to make the difficult choice between the hospitality stream and real estate stream. It was a tough call as both industries have their own lure and qualities that fit my personality and goals.

My professors who saw me struggling offered not only valuable advice but also pure empathy and support. They gave me bountiful information to read up on and let me take control over my future instead of driving me to a certain direction. Professors with substantial experiences in both industries were more than willing to give up their free time and discuss this issue with me. Because of the clarity and honesty that I was offered, I was able to make up my mind.

In the two years that followed after I chose the real estate stream, other challenges came such as academic difficulties and which real estate firms I should go for. Throughout all that, my professors never abandoned me and offered continued support and advice which gave me confidence and motivation to discover what I truly want and follow my dreams.

I cannot imagine what would have happened if the professors did not offer a helping hand or if I wasn’t given the opportunity to freely connect with them. It was definitely life changing and I’m glad things turned out the way I hoped.

What’s the most unforgettable experience in your CUHK learning journey?

I could go on and on when asked about my memorable experiences in my CUHK learning journey, but the most unforgettable one would be the study tour that I joined in Year 1 summer. That year, SHTM has organised a study tour to Sydney with the focus on sustainability and what the hospitality industry can do in that regards.

This trip is the definition of active learning, we did not have long lectures or courses to attend but in each destination, we explored different elements of what it means to be sustainable and gained other knowledge such as how similar or dissimilar Sydney operates their commercial properties. We also visited heritage centres that preserve and promote the importance of indigenous culture that is often overlooked when talking about sustainability. We were also extremely lucky to visit Qantas headquarters to get an exclusive look into one of the largest airlines in the world.

During this trip, not only was I able to gain a lot of knowledge, but I also had a lot of fun with my peers from different years. Coincidentally, the study tour was made up of a group of girls and we had a lot of fun shopping and ate lots of good food. We were able to bond with each other thanks to the extremely flexible itinerary.

What did you learn from CUHK that you think it made an impact on your career?

My biggest takeaway from CUHK is definitely interpersonal skills. As I was in the same primary and secondary school for 12 years prior to my undergraduate studies, I was immersed in my comfort zone all the time and at first, I was extremely reluctant and even resistant to meeting new people in university.

However, the diverse and inclusive environment in CUHK prompted me to step out of my comfort zone. With the different societies, committees and activities all year round, it was easy and comforting to me to reach out and mingle with different people.

It was a slow and gradual change that I did not even take notice of. But now, as I stepped into the working world, I realise how important this skill is. Every minute of the day, even if you’re not facing clients, you are developing different relationships with your colleagues, peers and seniors. Without this essential skill, it is close to impossible to grow and develop one’s career.

“The well-rounded journey at CUHK has enabled me to explore my true interests and new fields. Over the past years, CUHK granted me numerous opportunities for gaining international exposure… To me, what university has taught me the most is the importance of networking. I would like to thank all the professors that have guided me along the way and helped me set my career goal.”

– Fan-yu Guu [Professional Accountancy (PACC) 2021]

The well-rounded journey at CUHK has enabled me to explore my true interests and new fields. Over the past years, CUHK granted me numerous opportunities for gaining international exposure, including the experience of studying at University of Oxford and taking a summer internship in Melbourne. What’s more, I was impressed by the curriculum offered by CUHK Business School. During the lectures, we were able to interact with practitioners from relevant fields as well as deal with real-life cases to keep up with the market trends. The most memorable project was the one we cooperated with Cathay Pacific to design a new marketing campaign, which was led by Prof. Tingting Fan.

To me, what university has taught me the most is the importance of networking. I would like to thank all the professors that have guided me along the way and helped me set my career goal, in particular Mr. Eric Leung, Dr. YY Butt and Dr. Anthony Law. Besides, I have learnt a lot from my friends and classmates, who are talented, diligent and warm-hearted. The people I met, and the experience I went through at CUHK have cultivated me to become a better person.

“Looking back at my CUHK journey, Mr. Eric Leung, our programme director influenced me the most… He encouraged me to grab every opportunity and be bold for not following the norms. Seeking advice from experienced and generous mentors like him really helped me a lot in starting off my career…”

– Sharie Kong Cheuk Yi (PACC 2021)

Looking back at my CUHK journey, Mr. Eric Leung, our programme director influenced me the most. I participated in PACC’s admission talk in the last year of my secondary school life. At that time, I was confused and not sure which subject I should study at university. It was Eric who told us at the talk that “accounting is the cornerstone of the business world which can help you excel in various industries”. I am open to possibilities, and hence I chose PACC. During my days at CUHK, I got numerous chances to speak to and learn from him, including my participation in the accounting society and the admission process of the Global Accounting Stream, etc. He encouraged me to grab every opportunity and be bold for not following the norms. Seeking advice from experienced and generous mentors like him really helped me a lot in starting off my career.

The most unforgettable experience at CUHK would be my tenure at the accounting society. Being an external vice president with the experience of working with 14 talented young people have pushed me to grow and learn. I tried many new things and developed various skills during my tenure, including organising a large-scale orientation camp and networking with prominent business professionals. These experiences have also trained me to become a better member of the society, and I have learnt a lot about team collaboration, working attitudes and communications skills. This is the most precious takeaway from my university life.

“Over the past year, my learning journey in CUHK was unforgettable and filled with joy. I’d like to thank Dr. Joyce Wang, Ellen Lin, Joyce Lee and all the MAcc faculty members for their meticulous care and support, giving me the feeling of home … I’m deeply thankful and blessed for meeting every faculty member and alumnus in MAcc. I hope to follow their examples, learn from them, and become an expert in the field of accounting.”

My academic advisor Dr. YY Butt must be the one who influenced me the most at CUHK. In his class, he used vivid examples to make the study of tax law no longer boring, not only leading us to explore the magical mysteries of the taxation world but also revealing the importance of tax planning for a company. It cultivated my curiosity and enthusiasm towards a career in tax. Meanwhile, Dr. Butt inspired us with his own legendary experience and personal charisma, motivating us to become successful business leaders of the future.

Inspired by Dr. Butt, I chose to start my career in the tax department of a Big Four accounting firm. The curriculum of Dr. Butt’s elective course “International Taxation Planning and Management” is very relevant to my current job scope. For example, the course taught me about international taxation, such as OECD Model Tax Treaties and transfer pricing rules. I was excited that my learnings could be applied from the course to my work. In addition, course activities such as role play, research project and group presentation have also enhanced the general level of my tax literacy in various aspects.

I’m deeply thankful and blessed for meeting every faculty member and alumnus in MAcc. I hope to follow their examples, learn from them, and become an expert in the field of accounting.

Our class committee president, Nira Xi (MAcc 2021) influenced me the most in my studies at CUHK. She’s a girl who is full of positive energy and is so warm-hearted to try her best to help other classmates in need. I truly enjoyed every precious moment to get along with my fellow classmates during the epidemic time, whether we took classes together in the classroom, or we had dinner in the canteen. The programme taught me the importance of developing my own professional network. MAcc provided ample opportunities for its students to build relationships with alumni which I think would be very helpful for my career development.

“Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.” I know I’m not Martin Luther King, nor do my dreams warrant any grandiosity, but my CUHK MiM journey is for sure a leap of faith. Without strong textbook knowledge on business and management, I envisioned a tough year ahead when I started my studies at CUHK. Fortunately, I have attained much more than what I could expect in terms of self-discovery and improvement.

There are many people I want to thank.Prof. Tina Choi and Dr. John Lai are the two in particular I want to express my gratitude. Thanks Prof. Choi for having faith in me and being such a practical mentor to me. I can’t stress to her how much I appreciate her selfless sharing of experience that has guided me in the right direction. Thanks Dr. Lai for always being with the students. It was always comforting to know that your programme director was one message away from a coffee chat. Thank you for your patience and giving me a confidence boost when I first started the MiM journey.

The most unforgettable experience was our cohort’s BBQ party, along with the MiM Team. It was a bittersweet goodbye, and I must also thank those who beat the COVID blues together with us in the past year. It’s been a pleasure to learn from you all, and I do believe our paths will cross again in the future.

Is there anyone (i.e. teachers, classmates, alumni, etc.) who influenced you the most at CUHK?

I am deeply influenced by Prof. Howard Lam. I knew him when he was a guest speaker at CUHK-Shenzhen, and I chose MSc in Marketing at CUHK because of his strong recommendation. In my postgraduate study at CUHK, he was the lecturer of my favourite course, Marketing Research. I learnt a lot from his lectures, from product concept design to multiple research methods. What’s more, I am deeply moved by his passion and insistence in marketing, and also decide to be a successful marketer in FMCG like him. Upon graduation, I appreciated his suggestions and teaching these years.

What’s the most unforgettable experience in your CUHK learning journey?

The most unforgettable experience in my CUHK learning journey was a business competition that I took part in with my fellow classmates. I, along with other two classmates and a student from the University of Hong Kong, participated in the P&G CEO Challenge this year and entered the Top 30 in China Division. I still remembered the meetings that we had in Cheng Yu Tung Building, and the creative ideas we came up with. I learnt a lot from my classmates, and I enjoyed the feelings of cooperating with excellent fellows and achieving meaningful results.

Is there anyone (i.e. teachers, classmates, alumni, etc.) who influenced you the most at CUHK?

It’s definitely Prof. Hao Shen who influenced me the most at CUHK! He taught us the most fundamental and practical marketing knowledge in the very beginning of our programme. He encouraged and gave us the confidence to overcome difficulties that helped me achieve good results in the coming year. Prof. Shen gave me the chance to be a class representative, so that I could hone my interpersonal skills and make friends with many fellow classmates and learn from them. He also gave me many valuable recommendations about study, career and life. He is not only a good teacher, but also an excellent mentor and friend of mine!

What’s the most unforgettable experience in your CUHK learning journey?

The most unforgettable experience in my CUHK learning journey was a project conducted by my team in the Marketing Research course. I, along with five other classmates, completed the project and got the highest grade in class. I enjoyed the experience of doing project with my best friends and achieving remarkable results together.

I am honoured to have joined CUHK as a student of MScRE. Over the past year, I not only met top-notch professors with cutting-edge industry insights, but also gained professional industry knowledge and friendships with a group of lovely and outstanding classmates.

My year-long study in CUHK MScRE helped me identify my career direction and laid a solid foundation of professional knowledge for my future career development. The most unforgettable experience at CUHK was about taking Dr. Ervi Liusman’s course. Through Augmented Reality (AR) technology and field trips, we have deepened our understanding and application of professional knowledge. I would also like to thank Dr. Jenny Tian and Mr. Hugh Huang for their meticulous care and support during my learning journey, giving me the feeling of home.

In my studies at CUHK, the most impressive thing was that I could learn from many outstanding teachers who have strong industry experience and are kind to offer their rigorous guidance to us. My most unforgettable experience was the course taught by Dr. Ervi Liusman, who applied Virtual Reality technology for the first time to assist the explanation of theories. I also appreciated the offline discussion about career planning with Zhaoxin Jiang, an honorary research fellow from CUHK’s Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies. During my CUHK learning journey, I met many humble and talented alumni who had fully utilised the learning resources of CUHK and left vivid and unforgettable memories of studying and living in Hong Kong.

Dr. Liusman’s course was so eye-opening that students could explore potential career directions based on their interests, such as consulting, internet strategy, product manager and more. For example, I switched from a Big 5 Real Estate Consultancy Firm (CBRE, Colliers International, Cushman & Wakefield, Jones Lang LaSalle and Savills) to BAT (Baidu, Alibaba and Tencent). My most valuable takeaway from studying in Hong Kong is the prudent attitude towards work and study, the innovative business mindset, and the spirit of constantly seeking new experiences.

When a Next-Gen Football Exec Marches In [#permalink]
FROM CUHK: When a Next-Gen Football Exec Marches In
Finding Passion on the Pitch
Few people can claim that their summer job at age 17 was to manage FC Barcelona’s Hong Kong Tour. The legendary Spanish football club was invited to play a friendly match against Kitchee, a professional football club in Hong Kong. Jessica’s father, the President of Kitchee, encouraged her to take advantage of this extraordinary opportunity to explore the industry and see if she had the interest to learn.

Despite enjoying largely free rein, Jessica soon found that many people looked down on her, not believing that this young lady was up to the task. “But all this only motivated me to work even harder to prove myself,” Jessica said, “Through, it was also an ego thing.”

During this time, Jessica also discovered she has “football genetics” in her DNA: “Football is definitely the first thing I fell in love with. Football is basically my life. Nothing else attracts and motivates me quite the same way.”

Gaining Finesse at Home and Away
Jessica stepped briefly away from football when she went to the University of British Columbia in Canada to study psychology. After graduation, she returned to Hong Kong and re-joined Kitchee as Project and PR Manager. For five years, she helped bring top European teams such as Arsenal, Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham Hotspur to Hong Kong for exhibition matches.

Though it sounds exciting, it was not always sunshine and rainbows. “The most memorable, but also the most difficult event, was when we hosted Manchester United in July 2013. The high-level event was supported by the government’s Mega Events Fund and we sold out all the tickets months in advance. However, about three months before the match, we received news that Sir Alex Ferguson was stepping down as team manager. Everything came to a halt in the UK while they waited for the new manager to come on board. We didn’t know whether there would be any changes to the schedule or the squad. At the time, our office only had a few people working on this event, one of them was my father and another was our accountant. You can imagine the amount of stress I was under! But this experience also pushed me forward.”

Jessica decided to take a break from football in 2018 to broaden her exposure. She joined a sports PR agency called Yello Marketing, explaining, “The opportunity allowed me to serve different types of clients and host various types of events, including Cycle for Millions and the FIVB Volleyball Nations League Hong Kong Leg. I was very fortunate to have good colleagues and good clients who helped me grow, and I became a more mature person as a result.”

“No matter which position you are in, you need to find your value and prove that you are capable.”

— Jessica Ng

Establishing Herself in a Him Industry
Working in a male-dominated industry is difficult enough for a young woman. But the most challenging aspect for Jessica was distinguishing herself as a capable young executive.

After spending more than nine years overseeing Kitchee’s projects, PR and marketing, Jessica is now the club’s Director of Licensing and Compliance. She said the change was necessitated as a result of Kitchee’s growth: “Licensing has always been central to professional football. We have to be accountable to the Football Association, the Asian Football Confederation, FIFA, and other stakeholders. There are specific guidelines, policies and licensing requirements that we must follow. We won’t be able to play if we fail to fulfil the requirements. My job now is to make sure every department in the club complies with the rules so that we can take the club to the next level.

Revitalising Football for Social Impact
More than that, Kitchee is setting its sights on revitalising Hong Kong’s football industry. It is creating an ecosystem to engage the public and generate greater social impact through football. Jessica is constantly coming up with ideas on what Kitchee can do to contribute. She explained that, because football is not a part of the government’s “elite training programme”, clubs have the responsibility to advance sport’s development in Hong Kong.

“Instead of focusing on performance excellence, we’re hoping to engage more people in football with our side initiatives, including our nutrition canteen, rehabilitation centre in partnership with CUHK Medical Centre and the Kitchee Academy. Our goal is to broaden, strengthen and diversify the base of this industry, and create job opportunities. We have to be innovative, and show that we’re leading the sport, and Hong Kong, to a brighter future.”

When COVID precluded Kitchee from celebrating its 90th anniversary with major celebrations, Jessica used the opportunity to manifest Kitchee’s social purpose and care for Hong Kong. The club donated medical equipment to the United Christian Hospital, one of Kitchee’s long-term beneficiaries, and supported the needy through a “meal box matching campaign”. In early 2020, Kitchee imported surgical masks and hand sanitizers from Thailand and distributed them to the underprivileged. Jessica said that these activities allowed Kitchee to lead by example and live out its social responsibility.

Dribbling to a Higher League
Having fewer matches during COVID gave Jessica some free time to learn. She took two online courses from Harvard Business School to hone her management knowledge. “These courses helped me realise that I must keep learning in this rapidly changing world. If I want to stay competitive or become a successful executive, I must be well-equipped.”

Jessica chose CUHK’s EMBA programme to achieve her goal. She said the programme has broadened her thinking and especially opened her eyes to subjects such as finance and economics. She was captivated by courses on business law and marketing because of their relevance to her work and her long-time interests.

Jessica also enjoys meeting and interacting with classmates from other sectors. “Through presentations, group discussions and projects, not only do I get to know them personally, but I also get to understand their industries and their priorities. I’m grateful to study with them along my EMBA journey.”

“I’m grateful to study with classmates from diverse sectors along my EMBA journey.”

— Jessica Ng

Finding, Proving, Creating Value
Constantly learning and taking on challenges, Jessica is now studying Korean, partly to de-stress and partly to prepare for potential opportunities ahead. “I’m always hoping for something to happen with other football countries. Korea has been one of the front runners in Asian football, who knows what’s going to happen in the future?”

All this chimes well with Jessica’s motto for life, “Passion is one thing, but you need to find your value. No matter which position you are in, you need to find your value and prove that you are capable.”

Jessica is using the EMBA to advance herself so that she can create greater value in football. Down the line, she hopes to develop something she can claim ownership of. “For now, I’ll be focusing on Kitchee, and I’m happy to see my career progress. As my father keeps reminding me, “the most important thing is to make sure what we do today is better than what we did yesterday.”

FROM CUHK: Alumni Lecture Series Inaugurated with Randy Lai (EMBA 2005) – Shedding Light on Business Innovation at McDonald’s Hong Kong
The first session of the CUHK Business School Alumni Lecture Series was successfully concluded on 10 November 2021 with the presence of alumni guest speaker, Randy Lai (EMBA 2005), CEO of McDonald’s Hong Kong, alongside nearly 500 students and alumni online and offline. Through the sharing of outstanding alumni with profound industry experience, this series aims to further develop students and alumni’s knowledge across different business fields, and to broaden their horizons.

Group Photo with all guests and participants; Ms. Randy Lai (first row, fifth from the right), CEO of McDonald’s Hong Kong
Professor Lin Zhou, Dean of theCUHK Business School, kick-started the session with an opening remark, “One of the key missions of the CUHK Business School is to nurture business leaders. We have been doing great throughout the past decades. Many of our alumni are successful leaders in the business world and society. They hold prominent positions in companies in different scales and different industries, contributing to the economic development of Hong Kong, China and other parts of the world in a great deal. Not only are they successful, but they also have so much to give. We are really blessed that they are eager to share their knowledge and experience with fellow students of their alma mater.”

Prof. Lin Zhou (right), Dean of the CUHK Business School, presenting a Certificate of Appreciation to Randy Lai (left) to recognise her unwavering support to CUHK Business School
Randy was then introduced onto the stage by a round of applause. She has been the CEO of McDonald’s Hong Kong since 2015, leading over 245 restaurants and 15,000 employees to serve over one million customers per day. Randy is not only the first CEO of McDonald’s Hong Kong who was locally born and raised, she was also the first female Managing Director of McDonald’s Singapore in 2010. She graduated from the EMBA programme of the CUHK Business School in 2005 and is currently an Adjunct Associate Professor here.

After going through her professional background and career development path, Randy went on to explain in detail how the brand essence – “Food, Folks and Fun” – brought McDonald’s Hong Kong to its position today and engaged the audience with interactive games. She emphasised that the drive behind innovation and breakthrough originates from the connection the brand has with the young generation, whose preferences and values should be embraced with the help of effective communication channels established via three pillars, namely “Modern”, “Authentic” and “Community”. Concluding from her marketing experience, she encouraged students and alumni in the business field to understand others from different perspectives, encourage co-creation and put faith into action.

Randy stayed behind to continue her conversation with the students after the session
To further the dialogue, Randy was joined by Dr. Rosette Leung, Lecturer in the Department of Marketing, and three student moderators in a subsequent Q&A session. She took questions from online and offline participants and responded in great detail. The fruitful evening was concluded with thunderous applause from the audience.
