Distance between Smith's house and office is \(D\) km. On Monday, Smith traveled to his office at \(M\) km/hr for the first 20 km, and the rest at a speed of \(1.25M\) km/hr. On, Tuesday, Smith traveled the same distance at a speed of \(M\) km/hr. what is ratio of time taken by Smith to travel from his house to office on Monday and Tuesday?

(1) \(M = 48\)
(2) \(D = 40\)

Answer is C
On Solving the equation the ratio of Monday to Tuesday is (D+5)/1.25M.
Thus both options are needed to give the rati. Hence, C

(1) \(M = 48\)
(2) \(D = 40\)

time taken on Monday = 20/M + (D-20)/1.25M = (D+5)/1.25M
time taken on Tuesday = D/M

Ratio of these two times = (D+5) / D*1.25 or 4/5 * (D+5)/D
So to solve this question, we just need the value of D, which is given in statement 2.

So answer should be B.

Total distance b/w home and office = D.
Monday:-
>1st part:-
Dist1 = 20km
S1 = M
T1 = 20/M
>2nd part:-
Dist2 = D - 20
S2 = 1.25M = 5M/4
T2 = (D-20)/(5M/4)
Hence Time(Monday) = Tm = T1 + T2 = 20/M + 4(D-20)/5M = (100 + 4(D-20))/5M

>Tuesday:
Dist = D
S = M
Time(Tuesday) = Tt = D/M
Tm:Tt = D(100 + 4(D-20))/5

i) M = 48
No info about D. Hence insufficient.
ii)D = 40. Hence sufficient to get Tm:Tt.
Answer is B.

Solution

As per question
Ratio of time

( (20/M) + (D-20)/1.25M )/ (D/M)

M cancel out .. only D is required to find value.
And B
