You're going to business school, right?

So, in general, does the cream of the crop go to business school? What is it like at your firm?

Just some guys I happen to know -

1. A below avg student in school, barely got through his commerce undergrad. Set up a business in table salt after undergrad - successfully running it ever since. All rounder - marketing, finance, entrepreneurship, operations. Mind boggling.

2. 2nd topper in my engg undergrad class - one of the last to land a job in campus recruitments. Has twice the brains and half the salary.

3. MBA from AIM (Manila), recently bought a villa in Seville

4. IIM (In India, the are the 'creme de la creme') graduates failing in their businesses. Okay, I don't know these guys - so I quote a reliable source

If I really were the cream of the crop where the opportunity cost would be so outrageous it would be stupid to go full-time, I would go part-time and fly to the best part-time program.

Just to keep all the bases covered.

Of course I would fly first-class on the weekends to the school because, hey, I'm cream of the crop.

I did mention this.

Maybe these guys are failing in the 'real' business world, but you have to agree that they are the 'cream of the crop' when it comes to academics (in India). Of course the fact that all good academicians make good businessmen is something that I don't agree with as well. Come to think of it, what do you guys think is the ultimate 'businessman' trait?

Good question. I would disagree that it would be 'THE ultimate trait'. It is more likely to be a combination -

1. Knowledge of the business and factors affecting it
2. Drive/Ambition
3. Risk assessment/Strategy
4. Networking ability

I personally feel that (2) and (3) are the most important. Yes, (1) and (4) are really important as well. But I personally feel (2) and (3) are *nearly* enough for one to be a good businessman.
